Description
Lucky Ladd Farms, an award winning agritourism destination, is adding a key leadership member to our hardworking and awesome animal husbandry team. This position requires a dedicated and responsible individual capable of supporting daily care of the animals at our facility as well as the operations of our interactive animal encounters. A successful candidate will be expected to work with a wide variety of animals, including domesticated and exotic mammals, reptiles, and birds. Lucky Ladd’s is expanding our our animal collection and educational programs with new species added annually. The ideal candidate will have a solid working knowledge of zoo safety; animal husbandry best practices; animal behavior; care, feeding, and handling of exotic animals; and techniques for restraining and capturing animals. Working directly with the public and serving as an animal encounter attendant along with providing keeper chats is required.
YOUR ROLE ON OUR TEAM:
– All aspects of animal husbandry including but not limited to cleaning, feeding, medicating, enrichment, training, handling/restraint, hand rearing when necessary, etc.
– Maintain records pertaining to births, deaths, injuries, behavioral observations, feeding, water quality , training activities, medical procedures, etc.
– Assisting animal care staff and veterinarians with medical treatments and procedures, transfers and crating.
– Reports facility, feed, and supply needs to Operations Manager and/or Food Service Manager in a timely manner.
– Ensure compliance with USDA AWA and Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency regulations.
– Training of animal care and encounter attendants on daily tasks and safe operation of interactive animal encounters.
– May include direct supervision of animal care staff and interns.
– Scheduling daily husbandry assignments for staff and interns.
– Enhance guest experiences by initiating conversations, providing assistance, answering questions, and educating the public about the animals throughout the Farm.
– Explain the rules of the exhibit and animal interactions to guests in animal encounter areas.
– Monitor the public ensuring the safety of guests and animals while assisting with crowd control and flow through interactive exhibits.
– Assist in preparation, selling, and distribution of animal feed for interactive exhibits.
Maintaining area grounds and buildings. Notifying maintenance of necessary repairs.
– Adherence to area specific standard operating procedures, including safety.
– Must be able to maintain discretion with confidential information.
– Assisting other animal keepers with their projects.
– Special Projects (may vary):
~ Assist in the design, development, and creation of animal habitats, exhibits, and holding areas.
~ Designing and delivering educational interpretation to the general public regarding animal behavior, habitat and conservation issues.
~ Develop and present ideas for positive contributions to enhance the guest experience at the Farm.
– Performing other duties as assigned
RECURRING SCHEDULE:
– Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 8:00am-5:00pm
– During the off-season (November-March) you have the option of either Monday-Friday or Sunday-Thursday from 8:00am-5:00pm
Education and Pre-requisites
SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES HAVE:
– High school diploma or equivalent; college degree in biology, animal science, agriculture or related field preferred.
– Two years minimum of documented experience working with non-domesticated/exotic animals in an institutional setting (i.e. Zoological Park, Aquarium, Wildlife Park/Rescue, Pet Shop, or Veterinary Clinic).
– Ability to respond to emergencies on an on-call basis.
– Personal attitude and characteristics that contribute to a positive work environment by being a team leader through example such as lending a hand even if it’s not your job, initiative to see what needs to be done and doing it without being asked, find serving others fulfilling, enthusiastic and ready to work.
– Basic knowledge of Word and Excel or similar software.
– Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
– Ability to effectively communicate with team members and guests.
– Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
– Must be able to work on your feet for extended periods of time and can bend, stoop, extend oneself etc., that is required to perform assigned tasks.
– Able to consistently lift and carry a minimum of 50lbs.
– Ability to perform all husbandry tasks for all species within the facility.

Salary: $31,200-$36,000 based on experience.
