Description
Full-time position responsible, under supervision, for the health and well-being of assigned collection animals. Responsible for the observation, handling, cleaning, feeding and husbandry of captive animals. Observe assigned animals closely, routinely, and objectively report to supervisor on their behavior, health and welfare. Observe condition of assigned area(s), animal enclosures, and equipment. Participate in training and operant conditioning. Clean and maintain animal exhibit areas, perform basic horticulture work within exhibit and disinfect animal enclosures. Monitor and clean public space(s), plants, and interpretive as assigned. Assist in restraining, crating, moving, and unloading of animals. Assist veterinarian or veterinary technician during animal examinations and treatment; perform prescribed medical treatments and procedures. Daily maintenance of animal records including feeding, breeding, health, and husbandry notes. Assist with institutionally approved research projects including procedures, data collection, and reports. Answer questions from the general public and conduct educational program tours or provide keeper chats.
Education and Pre-requisites
Bachelor of Science Degree in Applied Sciences, Animal Science, Agriculture, Biology, Zoology or relevant field required and one year of paid zoo animal keeping or related animal care experience. In lieu of a Bachelor Degree, four years of paid zoo animal care or related animal care experience and two years of college level courses in Biological Sciences required. Applicants must possess an understanding of practical principles of animal behavior and ability to work with live animals safely. Strong working knowledge of the principles and techniques of biology, zoology, and animal husbandry required. Good oral and written communication skills and the ability to interact with the public required. Driver’s license and ability to operate zoo vehicles required. Willingness to regularly work weekends, holidays and occasional after-hours assignments required.
Compensation and benefits
Usual benefits; Teamsters, hourly is currently $20.20
