Description
Essential Functions of the Job:
Feeds, cares for, and provides daily environmental enrichment for zoo animals; observes animal behavior and appearance to ensure good health; investigates cases of unusual animal behavior and discusses with Zoo Curator or Veterinarian; varies dietary requirements for animals as needed; complies with AZA accreditation and USDA standards and requirements; maintains records of animals including such items as description, sex, diet, and special behavioral characteristics; receives training in the proper use of blow and dart guns, shot guns, immobilizing drugs, control poles and squeeze cages; may use control poles, squeeze cages or tranquilizing darts to move or provide medical attention to animals; cleans exhibits and displays; responds to animal health emergencies or other needs after normal work hours; assists veterinarian with providing medical care and procedures; responds to public questions regarding animal habitat, health, and a variety of questions; performs various general maintenance activities such as painting, cleaning, raking, etc. to maintain Zoo buildings and exhibits; operates hand and power tools for general maintenance activities; builds animal boxes and shelters; assists with and provides input in to the design of exhibits; present and lead discussions on zoo animals to interested groups; develop educational curriculum and/or visual aids; lecture groups visiting the Zoo to explain animal habitat, characteristics and development.
Education and Pre-requisites
Superior Candidates:
Two (2) years paid working experience in an AZA accredited institution and a degree in a related field.

Selection Procedure:
