The San Francisco Zoological Society (“Society”) is a non-profit institution that manages and raises funds for San Francisco Zoo and Gardens (“Zoo”). The Society’s mission, supra, is summarized as the 3 c’s: to connect our visitors with wildlife so that they care about nature and ultimately conserve it. The Society’s leadership team is comprised of a President & Executive Director as well as a professional team of Senior Managers. The Society endeavors to meet or exceed the standards of its industry peers, including those established by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (“AZA”). For over 25 years, the Society has been continuously accredited by the AZA.

SUMMARY: This is a position for creative, enthusiastic, hardworking individuals with a strong interest in environmental education and working with children. You will inspire wonder, knowledge and action while teaching children ages 4-14. Successful applicants will be dependable, flexible, have a sense of humor, and a love for nature.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Assumes all responsibility for supervision of the children who are enrolled in the camp class and volunteers and/or assistant instructors who are assisting.
2. Ensures the safety of campers, staff and guests at all times.
3. Designs weekly lesson plans that correlate with the theme and goals of the class.
4. Researches and creates games, activities and crafts for class participants.
5. Implements and teaches lesson plans and activities.
6. Assists the Assistant Instructors in supervising and evaluating teen volunteers.
7. Maintains a clean and organized Zoo Camp environment.
8. Works effectively as a member of a team.
9. Interacts with Zoo guests and staff courteously and offers proper attention at all times.
10. Supports both the mission of the Zoo and the related mission of the Education Department by performing other duties as assigned by Zoo Camp management and/or Education management.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. • Ability to work full-time, Monday through Friday, for the entire camp season between June to the end of August.

EDUCATION:
• Bachelor’s degree with a background in education, biology, zoology, environmental studies, or a related field.

EXPERIENCE:
• Must have experience working with children in an educational or instructional setting (formal or informal teaching, camp staffing, tutoring, coaching, lessons, etc.).
• Minimum two years of teaching experience.
• Successful completion of a background check and fingerprinting.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• The San Francisco Zoo encourages bilingual candidates to apply.
• First Aid and CPR certification preferred.
• Teaching credential is a plus, but not required.
• Experience with children with special needs a plus.
• Experience working with and giving guidance to youth and adult volunteers preferred.
• Ability to work well collaboratively and manage time efficiently
• Be highly motivated and innovative, well organized, eager to take on new tasks and meet commitments.

Salary: $17.00/hour

Note: Instructors are expected to work all assigned weeks unless specific days off are approved by the Program Manager prior to employment.

Summer Zoo Camp will run Monday through Friday from June 11 through August 17, 2018. Training will take place the week of June 4th.
