Description

Reports To: Animal Curator, Central Park Zoo and Clinical Veterinarian assigned to City Zoos.

Direct Reports: Clinic Volunteers, Veterinary Technician Interns

Position Objective: To provide excellent care and medical treatment of animals in the CPZ collection, manage and maintain the clinic, laboratory, pharmacy and medical records.

Principal Responsibilities:
Perform and monitor medical treatments and husbandry care for hospitalized animals.

Prepare for, assist during, and clean up after surgical and anesthetic procedures in the clinic and on zoo grounds. This includes providing anesthetic monitoring, venipuncture, placement of IV catheters, fluid therapy and radiography as directed by veterinarians as part of the routine medical management of animals.

Perform clinical pathology testing including, CBC, urinalysis, fecal exams and others as required in a zoo laboratory setting.

Maintain and update written and computerized medical records in MedARKS and ZIMS.

Working knowledge of and ability to operate both digital and film based radiology systems, including portable and stationary units. Ability to position animals for radiographs; ability to accurately label and archive images.

Scheduling and administering preventative medical treatments such as routine vaccinations and deworming including training animal care staff as needed for their participation of these treatments.

Compound, calculate and dispense medications and treatment forms to zookeepers.

Facilitate communications between zoo management and staff veterinarians.

Undertake or assist in the disposition of nuisance wildlife potentially injurious to the zoo collection, including euthanasia under the direction of a veterinarian.

Communicate and coordinate with personnel at other institutions regarding pre-shipment medical testing and requirements.

Serve on emergency immobilization team and maintain readiness for animal emergencies including periodic dart preparation and training sessions for supervisory personnel.

Follow all safety protocols and understand the veterinary technician’s role in emergency procedures.

Supervise veterinary and veterinary technician students.

Actively and effectively communicate with other veterinary technicians within WCS.

Perform related tasks and duties as required.

Education and Pre-requisites

Veterinary Technician Degree; New York State Veterinary Technician license (or license eligibility) required

Required Qualifications:
Full time veterinary technician experience in a small and/or large animal practice with preference given to those with previous experience working in a zoological setting.

Must be able to read, write and communicate effectively in English.

Must be computer literate and have the ability to learn medical record programs such as ZIMS efficiently.

Ability to represent WCS in a professional manner and to establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with employees, colleagues, City and other government agencies, outside contractors, and the general public.

Must obtain and maintain New York State Veterinary Technician license throughout employment.

Compensation and benefits

Salary Range: $50,000 – $57,000
