Animal Adventure Park is an interactive educational facility, utilizing immersive, and hands-on exhibition, to engage guests in a manner to promote understanding and appreciation of the living world.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Under general supervision, the Veterinary Technician assists the Animal Management Team in administering daily care and treatment of the collection animals, accordance with the zoo’s program of veterinary care. This position will also perform diet preparation for the zoo’s animal collection as well as other duties as assigned.

POSITION DUTIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Supports and adheres to the Zoo’s program of veterinary care and preventive medical programs, by assisting with daily tasks, including:
• Administering medications, according to established protocols and laws.
• Reporting injuries, irregular behavior, death, or birth of hospitalized/quarantined animals to the Animal Management Team.
• Monitoring anesthesia and assisting with veterinary procedures.
• Assisting with movement, capture and restraint of animals.
• Performing routine laboratory processing analysis.
• Monitoring health and welfare of quarantined animals and animals under medical treatment.
• Changing dressings and bandaging as directed.
• Maintaining inventory of medical supplies.
• Adheres to all licensing, continuing education and supervision requirements dictated by the state of New York.
• Entering medical records on treatments and animal care tasks performed.
• Maintaining Animal Adventure standards as well as USDA regulations and ZAA standards.
• This position may at times be requested to perform other duties or special projects as assigned.

Education and Pre-requisites

• EDUCATION:
• Associate’s Degree in Registered Veterinary Technology.
• EXPERIENCE:
• Ideal candidate will have 1-year full time employment as a licensed registered veterinary technician, preferably in a zoological institution.
• Comprehensive knowledge of veterinary procedures and technology, including routine equipment usage and the application of technical skills.
• Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office required. Familiarity with animal record keeping software recommended preferred.
• Knowledge and experience working with non-domestic animal species preferred.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to understand/follow written and oral instructions.
• OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• Must have valid driver’s license.
• Must have or be able to obtain negative TB test.
• Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

Compensation and benefits

Salary:
Beginning wage is based upon experience. With personal progression shown, raises and bonuses are available for each individual.

Benefits:
After 90 days of employment, full time staff members may choose to take part in the park medical benefit plan, with 50% cost covered by park owner. After 1 year of service, full time staff members will be enrolled in the park’s employer paid 401K plan. (100% of the annual contribution is covered by the park owner.)
