Animal Adventure Park is a ZAA accredited, interactive, and educational facility that utilizes hands-on and immersive exhibition, that engages our guests in a manner to promote understanding, and appreciation of the living world.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Under general supervision of the Curator of Parks, the Veterinary Program Assistant will:
-Act as a liaison for our veterinary team to ensure proper care for the park’s animal collection
-By maintaining medical supply inventory, and medical records
-Ensure our schedule for preventative treatments is followed
-Oversee adherence to all prescribed medical treatments by animal care staff.
-Assists the Animal Management Team in administering daily medical care and treatment of the collection animals, in accordance with the zoo’s program of veterinary care.
-This position will also perform basic animal care duties at times
including; diet preparation for the zoo’s animal collection, and quarantine care, along with other assigned duties in the capacity of the role.

POSITION DUTIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

-Supports and adheres to the Zoo’s program of veterinary care and preventive medical programs, by assisting with daily park tasks, including:
-Assisting in, and administering, medical treatments prescribed by the veterinary team, according to established protocols and laws.
-Observing and reporting injuries, behavior changes, body conditions, births, deaths, or concerns of the Animal Care Team to the Veterinary Team.
-Provide veterinary prescribed treatments with accompanying medical treatment sheets to the parks animal care management team for assignment
-Assisting veterinary team with procedures while on site.
-Assisting with movement, capture, and restraint of animals.
-Performing routine laboratory processing analysis.
-Monitoring health and welfare of animals under medical care, as well as any quarantined animals, and provide daily husbandry for them
-Maintaining inventory of medical supplies.
-Entering medical data/records on treatments and animal care tasks performed.
-Maintaining Animal Adventure standards within full compliance of USDA AWA regulations and ZAA accreditation standards.
-This position may at times be requested to perform other duties or special projects as assigned.

Education and Pre-requisites

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

·EDUCATION:
-A formal degree within the Animal or biological field is preferred
but is not required if experience is commiserate with the scope of duties to be performed

·EXPERIENCE:

The ideal candidate will have at minimum:
– 1-year full time employment within the veterinary field as a veterinary technician, veterinary assistant, or veterinary office manager.
Preferably in a zoological institution, large animal, or exotic animal practice.
-Comprehensive knowledge of veterinary procedures, including routine equipment usage and their application is preferred.
-Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office; required. Familiarity with animal record keeping software is preferred.
-Knowledge and experience working with non-domestic animal species preferred.
-Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to understand/follow written and oral instructions.

OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

-Must have a valid driver’s license.
-Must receive and/or provide a negative TB test.
-Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
-Must be able to push, pull, drag 100 pounds.
-Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays and evening hours, in all weather extremes.

Compensation and benefits

SALARY:

-Beginning wage is based upon prior experience.
-With personal progression shown, raises and bonuses are available for each individual.

BENEFITS:

-After 45 days of employment:
Full time staff members may choose to take part in the park medical & dental benefit plan, with 50% of the cost covered by the park owner.
-After 1 year of service:
Full time staff members will be enrolled in the park’s employer paid 401K plan. (100% of the annual contribution is covered by the park owner.)
