The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Senior Vice President for the Animal Rescue, Care and Sanctuary (ARCS) department. In this position you will be responsible for the overall planning, budgeting, staffing, and evaluation for the ARCS department including all Sanctuary Centers, the animal rescue team and associated access to care and response programs. Responsible for guiding and inspiring a team of talented staff while collaborating with staff at all levels to ensure the teamwork of multiple program and functional entities.
You will be responsible for:
• Managing the development and implementation of business and management processes and policies across the department to ensure clarity, consistency, and effectiveness in support of the organization’s performance, operational excellence, and customer services; continually reviewing internal operations and processes, identifying opportunities and executing changes for improvement;
• Setting and directing the overall strategy of the programs of the department. Promoting and reinforcing a performance culture and the attainment of goals by communicating and building commitment to corporate strategic direction and ensuring clarity around performance targets and expectations;
• Ensuring that responsibilities, authority, and accountability of all direct reports are defined and understood. Ensuring that staff set and achieve goals that align with the overall strategy of the function and organization, and providing staff with guidance and advice, training, performance management, leadership development, and career development. Identifying and developing potential successors;
• Assisting philanthropy with fundraising efforts for the department including donor cultivation, grants, and digital campaigns;
• Influencing and building relationships with a network of internal and external stakeholders supporting the overall effectiveness of the organization’s and department’s operations and achievement of critical department and organizational goals;
• Facilitating efforts of the directors of each program, handling needed approvals, acquisitions, and bureaucratic requirements to ensure efficient operations;
• Developing and overseeing the budgets of each program with full accountability. Ensuring budgets and resource allocations align with the priorities of each program and the organization;
• Representing the organization and department at various forums, including professional meetings, conferences, and workshops. Serving on boards, committees, and councils as needed;
• Directing and leading the Animal Rescue, Care and Sanctuary department, including the Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch, Duchess Sanctuary, Rural Area Veterinary Services, Pets for Life, Spayathon, Second Chance Chimpanzee Refuge Liberia and the Global Animal Rescue and Response team.
Education and Pre-requisites
Qualifications and Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in Nonprofit Management, or related field, or equivalent work experience, required. Advanced degree (Master’s, JD, PhD.) or equivalent knowledge on direct care issues preferred;
• Minimum of fifteen (15) years of experience overseeing direct care programs, animal sanctuaries, large scale animal cruelty responses, or similar experience required. Experience should also include strategic planning, program management, business or nonprofit operations, or another related field;
• Experience with direct handling of animals strongly preferred;
• Change management experience is highly desired;
• Management experience in a related field, which has included management and leadership responsibilities for staff, developing/implementing operational processes, strategy development and execution, preparing/managing budgets and, achieving results through cross-functional coordination/collaboration and team development/management (e.g., engagement, mentoring, and coaching), preferably in the animal welfare arena, required;
• Commitment to animal protection;
•Superior leadership skills with demonstrated knowledge and understanding of staff management practices and processes and the ability to establish accountabilities and expectations and manage performance to achieve results;
• Superior communication (written and oral) skills with the ability to translate information into a meaningful, understandable context and message, regardless of the format (e.g., documents, public speaking situations, presentations, etc.);
• Knowledge of business operations, including effective budget development and management processes, as well as the ability to translate strategic thinking into action plans and related outcomes;
• A high level of confidence, integrity, interpersonal skills, and a professional executive presence for effectively interacting with and influencing others, internal and external to HSI, as well as for facilitating meetings and conducting public speaking/presentations;
• The ability to build/foster relationships by reinforcing trust and respect, and demonstrating high standards of tact, diplomacy, and discretion;
• Demonstrated critical thinking and analytical skills, as well as the ability to handle complex situations and demonstrate sound judgment and problem-solving;
• Excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills with demonstrated flexibility and the ability to manage multiple and often changing priorities and issues of varying complexity, while meeting time sensitive deadlines and deliverables;
• Demonstrated propensity to be creative, collaborative, proactive, and self-motivated in the execution and completion of assigned accountabilities;
• Strong business acumen, negotiation, and mediation skills, as well as a demonstrated attention to detail and a focus on achieving quality outcomes;
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-energy, demanding and deadline driven environment with aplomb;
• Technical proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (i.e., WORD, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook);
• The ability to work long hours should a crisis arise;
• Willingness to travel.
