Description
Position: Senior Life Support Systems Technician
Reports To: Associate Director of Animal Husbandry
Position Summary:
The Senior Life Support Systems Technician is responsible for the monitoring and maintenance of all equipment that is associated with live animal exhibits. This includes managing the preventative maintenance of all LSS equipment at LLPA including but not limited to pumps, sand filters, UV, ozone generators and other equipment that is critical to animal health. Duties include writing protocols and procedures, installation of new equipment, scheduling all routine maintenance on aquatic exhibits using approved LLPA protocols, backwashing filters, conducting water changes and the addition of chemicals to maintain water quality to pre-determined standards. This position is also responsible for improving exhibits by planning system design, modifying existing systems, and installing new equipment. The Senior Life Support Systems Technician will model an outstanding work ethic, be an example of safety and efficiency, and have accountability for equipment health, water quality and animal safety.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Act as a resource for Level I, II and III Life Support Technicians, as well as interns and volunteers
• Be an example of safety and efficiency in their daily duties
• Write protocols and procedures to be used in the operation and maintenance of LSS equipment
• Manage the preventative maintenance program of all LSS equipment including:
a. Scheduling routine maintenance for all equipment
b. Assigning preventative maintenance work orders to other LSS technicians
c. Purchasing and maintaining inventory of all needed supplies and back-up equipment to ensure continued operations in the face of challenges
d. Utilizing the LSS module within ZIMS to identify and log all maintenance done to LSS equipment according to approved protocols and procedures
• Identify problems with, and implement changes to system design and operation to ensure safety for staff and the animal collection
• Assist the Associate Director of Animal Husbandry in planning and implementing new life support system design and installation
• Work closely with the facilities staff to ensure the safe installation, maintenance and operation of all LSS equipment, while maintaining all the need of the animals in exhibits and holding systems at LLPA
• Maintain the highest level of quality as it relates to the aquarium’s public and exhibit image
• Perform inspections, preventative maintenance, routine upkeep, cleaning, and repair of all life support equipment
• Understand water chemistry reports and their relationships to life support systems
• Maintain accurate and detailed life support systems logs and records
• Assist in the making of sea water for marine systems
• Participate in special training and professional development opportunities as needed
• Inspect, monitor, repair, maintain and rebuild life support system equipment as required
• Work closely with the husbandry staff, other departments and volunteers
• Respond to emergencies as required
• Perform other duties as assigned
Education and Pre-requisites
Qualifications:
• A BS/BA degree in related field with at least 5 years full-time paid experience
• Proficient in operating, maintaining, designing and building life support systems for marine and freshwater systems.
• Knowledge and ability to adhere to OSHA standards and proper use of personal protective equipment in an aquarium environment.
o Preferred certification – OSHA 10 for General Industry
• Skilled in general construction, troubleshooting mechanical systems, and the safe use of tools
• Experience with GF+ and Signet sensors and controllers and their maintenance
• Experience with Ozone generation, safety, handling, and its use in aquariums
• Preferred certification – AALSO Operator Level III
• PADI Open Water Diver Certification or equivalent
Critical Skills/Competencies:
Knowledge of pumps, filters, fractionators, UV sterilizers, heat exchangers, ozone systems and automated control equipment. Strong demonstrated knowledge of water chemistry and monitoring in an aquarium environment. SCUBA certification from an internationally recognized training association. Ability to work in a team environment and have strong oral and written communication skills. Attention to detail and cleanliness are a must.
Physical Demands of the Job:

• The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 lbs and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds, stand for long periods of time and drive aquarium vehicles
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear
• The employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers to handle, reach or feel and manipulate objects or controls
• The employee is frequently required to sit, walk distances, climb, balance, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch and stand for long periods for time
Special Working Conditions:
You will be working around water, salt, power tools, hazardous chemicals, and potentially dangerous animals. Work may be performed at off-site locations, at night and or on weekends. Must be able to work in an industrial work environment including confined spaces and areas with low headroom and difficult access as well as with hazardous chemicals.
