SEASONAL ANIMAL CARE WORKER – ZOO

General Summary:
Under the supervision of the Curator assists keepers in the daily husbandry of the animals in the Pony Path, Contact Area and Wings Down Under areas. Also receives direction from Head Keeper and Guest Experience Supervisor. Maintains hand-written and electronic records related to animal care. Provides a positive experience for the zoo visitor and animal during their up close encounter. Provides excellent guest services at all times. Must always strive to maintain best practices as established by AZA and exceed USDA guidelines.
Essential Functions:
1. Interacts positively with zoo visitors and coworkers creating an exceptional guest experience.
2. Performs a wide range of basic animal husbandry tasks. This may include diet preparation and distribution, bathing, grooming, providing enrichment, exhibit inspection, stocking and cleaning (raking, sweeping, hosing, washing, scrubbing, etc.)
3. Helps maintain AZA and USDA standards of cleanliness in keeper areas and storage areas.
4. Provides daily assessment of health and behavior of animals in assigned animal area. All observations and concerns must be reported to a full time keeper in the associated animal area immediately.
5. Maintains hand written and electronic records regarding the care of animals and work assignment progress as directed.
6. Responds to emergency situations as necessary and keeps up to date on all facility protocols and procedures.
Other Functions:
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Must adhere to departmental standards in regard to HIPAA and other privacy issues.
• During a public health emergency, the employee may be required to perform duties similar to, but not limited, to those in his/her job description.
• An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the above tasks. These examples do not include all of the tasks which the employee may be expected to perform.
Education and Pre-requisites
Employment Qualifications:
• Education: High School Diploma or equivalent
• Experience: Prior cash handling, customer service and animal experience preferred
• Other Requirements: Must have a negative TB test
Compensation and benefits
Annual Salary: $ 9.45/Hour
This is a full time (40 hour/week) position consisting of five 8-hour work days. Work hours are 8 am – 4:30 pm.
