Description
The Ellen Trout Zoo is looking for a motivated person to work with a wide variety of herpetological species. Types of animals under the care of this person include a high proportion of crocodilians and venomous snakes; previous experience with these is preferred. Other animals will include non-venomous snakes, lizards, turtles/tortoises, invertebrates, amphibians, as well as some birds and mammals.
The position requires knowledge of herpetology, including husbandry and exhibitry techniques, nutritional requirements, behavior, common diseases, capture and restraint and propagation methods. The successful candidate will need to maintain and develop a broad knowledge base on the proper husbandry of amphibians and reptiles. Candidates will need to have good communication skills, be able to follow specific instruction and to communicate activities and observations clearly in writing and verbally.
Examples of duties include all aspects of daily animal care and maintenance including cleaning, feeding, watering, observing, enclosure upkeep, propagation, monitoring health, medicating under veterinary supervision, record keeping, informal education exchanges with zoo guests, and other aspects of professional animal care and management. The position requires a respect for animals, a professional attitude about the work and the ability to work independently with quality results for the benefit of the animals.
The Ellen Trout Zoo is an active participant in Louisiana Pine Snake working group and propagation efforts as well as many other programs.
Education and Pre-requisites
The position requires: a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology; good physical condition; ability to present a positive professional image of the City of Lufkin and the Zoo to members of the public. The job involves working on weekends and holidays.
Compensation and benefits
This is a full time position with full benefits and a starting salary is $25,793.59 annually.
