When most think of the Zoo, they imagine the animals and the individuals that care for the animals, but the behind the scenes, there are so many operations in certifying animal transactions, maintaining animal records, and ensuring compliance with regulations and permits related to the animal collection. The Indianapolis Zoo is actively looking for an experienced Registrar to be the main point of contact to these vital operations and to join our amazing team! The ideal candidate is committed to advancing the Zoo’s mission to protect nature and inspire people to care for our world. This position is vital to Zoo operations, knowledge of Zoo nomenclature, methods of record keeping, laws regulating animal acquisition, disposition, and international and domestic transportation is required to be successful in this position. A team-oriented personality and strong interpersonal skills are also a requirement as the successful candidate will work closely with volunteers and in constant communication with other zoological institutions all over the world.

This is a full-time, 40 hour per week, position that may be required to work some weekends and evenings depending on animal acquisitions and their transportation needs. This position will serve as a liaison for the institution and outside organizations/institutions, as well as other departments within the Zoo, on matters of animal records and related animal regulatory and permit issues. Responsible for initiating all legal agreements related to animal transactions and monitors the status of all loans.

Education and Pre-requisites

Requirements and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

• A minimum of two (2) years of related work experience in a zoological setting.
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in biology/zoology or a related field.
• Coordinates, maintains, and disburses data pertaining to the animal collection, interfacing with curatorial, keeper, and animal health care staff and those with legitimate need for information outside the Zoo.
• Provides institutional data for studbook reports, questionnaires, surveys, and Species Survival Plan updates, or directs such requests to appropriate staff members. Acts as a data specialist providing statistical analysis and reports for various entities regarding the animal collection.
• Serves as administrator of animal records database and primary liaison between the institution and animal records software vendors (e.g. Species360-ZIMS or other animal records software).
• Executes applications and maintains required federal, state, and local wildlife permits, serving as liaison between the Zoo and those agencies granting and monitoring said permits.
• Assists in the preparation of statements concerning proposed legislation and governmental actions regarding wild and captive animals.
• Acts as recording secretary for departmental meetings, including but not limited to Collections Management Team meetings, produces and disseminates meeting minutes (including delegated assignments) within 24 hours of meeting.
• Must follow Universal Protection Precautions and Blood-borne Pathogens Guidelines. Possible exposure (Category C employee) to human blood-borne pathogens.
• Ability to detect, assess, identify, and observe surroundings to make sound judgments, along with the ability to communicate verbally, comprehend and decipher information accurately, using a two-way radio and telephone.
• Must possess strong computer and typing skills.

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of pre-employment testing including a criminal history and driving record check, and a drug test.
