Position: Public Programs Lead
Reports To: Public Programs Manager (PPM)
Position Summary: The Public Programs Lead (PPL) is responsible for supervising the day-to-day programs and staff of the Public Programs team. The PPL will mentor and train Aquarium Presenters and volunteers using a Learning Management System (LMS) as well as other teaching methods to drive continual improvement. The PPL encourages the staff to invent ways to make programming unique, interesting, fun, and educational.
Scope: The PPL ensures that all team members are up to date on all training, policies, procedures, and communications. The PPL reports directly to the Public Programs Manger and also works closely with the Education Leadership Team to insure high quality “edu-tainment” programming.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Supervise the day to day operations of the Education team, particularly in regards to the daily staffing schedule, exhibit and animal status, as well as staff wellbeing.
• Provide leadership, mentoring, and training to Aquarium Presenters in regards to programming, interacting with visitors, and protocols/procedures.
• Create new trainings for the team using the LMS and other training techniques.
• Supervise the use of Development Time in the office.
• Set an example of a “model presenters” by covering on the floor rotations and doing any and all presentations as needed.
• Regularly collect formal and informal observations and evaluations of the staff, as well as overall SHOW of the facility.
• Assume responsibility for the oversight of daily operations within the Education Department in the absence of the Public Programs Manager.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the PPM

Education and Pre-requisites

Education:
• Some college education is required; Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
• Experience in Informal Science Education and/or Customer Service.
Critical Skills/Competencies:
• Dynamic public speaking skills
• Confidence in handling animals, especially reptiles and insects
• Superior customer service skills
• Good written and oral communications skills
• Strong computer software skills
• Ability to mentor and supervise team members
• Ability to handle stress and unforeseen situations appropriately

Physical Demands of the Job:
This job requires long periods of time standing, walking, as well as extended periods of sitting with research and data entry. Also requires the ability to lift and carry at least 50 pounds.
Special Working Conditions:
Job requires working in an office environment and on the aquarium floor. Regular weekend, evenings, and holidays work is expected.
