The San Francisco Zoological Society (“Society”) is a non-profit institution that manages and raises funds for San Francisco Zoo and Gardens (“Zoo”). The Society’s mission, supra, is summarized as the 3 c’s: to connect our visitors with wildlife so that they care about nature and ultimately conserve it. The Society’s leadership team is comprised of a President & Executive Director as well as a professional team of Senior Managers. The Society endeavors to meet or exceed the standards of its industry peers, including those established by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (“AZA”). For over 25 years, the Society has been continuously accredited by the AZA.

POSITION SUMMARY: This position is considered exempt & journey level and reports to Executive Vice President of Human Resources or designee and on project basis to Vice President of Security & Belonging. Under general supervision, the incumbent will perform professional level human resources work and may take a lead on Diversity, Equity, Access and Inclusion (DEAI) initiatives. Other primary focus and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, consolidating and overseeing all volunteer programs; ensuring all volunteer programs comply with state and local rules, regulations and the Zoo’s DEAI mandates/initiatives; serving as a member of the Zoo’s DEAI Committee; and performing other duties as assigned. The incumbent is expected to be familiar with demographic studies, trends, analyses of San Francisco and the greater Bay Area.

Core Duties:

1. Assists in human resources functional activities: recruitment, classification & compensation, employee/union relations, benefits administration, DEAI outreach efforts, and other related operational matters;
2. Reviews and consolidates Zoo’s volunteer programs into one “umbrella” entity; works closely with Division managers and staff on outreach & coordination of volunteers; triages Zoo-wide needs for volunteers and assists in the deployment of volunteers to areas of greatest needs;
3. Assists in developing and implementing program outlines, procedures, training manuals and like consistent with applicable state and local ordinances, rules and regulations and/or DEAI initiatives;
4. Works closely with management staff on identifying potential opportunities at the Zoo for underserved communities in San Francisco and the greater Bay Area;
5. Creates and maintains Zoo wide databases, including contacts and relationships with non-profits, schools, community- and faith-based organizations, city departments, etc.;
6. Acts as primary contact for contractor and vendor questions related to DEAI standards; assists in educating, enforcing and supporting the achievement of organizational goals and objectives. Gathers and reports on vendor compliance;
7. Participates in fund or proposal development activities and produces presentations, written reports to committees, the Board and outside agencies, when necessary;
8. Conducts community outreach and relationship building and management; plans and produces community events both on and off-site;
9. Participates in the collective bargaining process by conducting research; preparing wage/salary analyses and other reports in support of negotiations;
10. Performs related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor of Arts or Science in human resources, management, demography, economics or a related field from an accredited college or university plus at least three (3) years of verifiable experience in human resources and/or coordinating volunteer activities as described above. Knowledge of basic management, training and labor/union relations and practices is required.
