Description
Utah’s Hogle Zoo has an exciting opportunity for a year-round, part-time Veterinary Technician. This position will assist the Veterinarian in a variety of technical duties to ensure animals health and perform duties unique to the position of Veterinary Technician. This is a flexible part-time position, non-benefit eligible and is restricted to 1500 hours annually. This position primarily works weekends (Friday – Monday). It is supervised by the Associate Director – Animal Health.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Must be able to safely restrain a variety of animal species
Responsible for the collection, logging, processing and tracking of biological samples
Be proficient at the proper set-up for all medical and surgical procedures
Be proficient at maintaining a clean and when appropriate, sanitized work area
Must be able to perform all in-house laboratory procedures
Data entry and computer proficiency is required
Required to accurately prepare, dispense, and administer medications
Must provide appropriate care for quarantine, holding, and hospitalized animals
Must be able to communicate effectively with staff and foster good relationships in order to further the best communication and compliance by the staff with regards to animal health
Comply with USDA, AZA guidelines and regulations
Other duties as assigned
Education and Pre-requisites
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Minimum of 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or GED
Background in animal care or veterinary technology
Proficient in basic math (algebra)
Proof of negative TB status within 90 days before the first day of employment
Undergo annual TB skin testing
Maintain a valid Utah Driver’s License
Must be able to work at a microscope for extended periods
Must be able to move quickly to avoid dangerous situations
Must be able to take direction and learn the skills specific to this position at a level of competency that allows the doctors to accurately diagnosis health conditions
Must be able to work under diverse and variable weather conditions including possibly allergy provoking situations (e.g. anesthetic gasses)
Will be in close proximity to visitors and must exercise professional communication skills
Must be able to lift over 60 pounds without injury; bend, stoop, jump, and stretch
Compensation and benefits
This is a flexible part-time position, non-benefit eligible and is restricted to 1500 hours annually.
