Basic Function:
The Manager, Wildlife Care, is responsible for the day-to-day management and operation of the Wildlife Care Branch, including planning, organizing, developing policies and procedures and budget administration. The position collaborates with Veterinarians and the wildlife science management team to achieve enhanced animal care. This position will assist and provide support in implementing the Strategic Plan.
Core Role Responsibilities:
Manages and directs the animal care function including the development of objectives while ensuring efficient utilization of the human and financial resources to achieve established performance targets.
Manages the preparation and expenditures of the annual operating budget for the Wildlife Care Branch including outline of various business cases for additional funding throughout the year for budget presentation.
Oversees and reports on the management, and well-being of the collection, as well as maintaining proper animal care standards within the Wildlife Care Branch.
Develops and ensures compliance with wildlife care policies, procedures and instructions.
Manages the preparation and expenditures of the annual operating budget for the Wildlife Care Branch.
Oversees the Zoo Keeper’s involvement in shipping, receiving, crating and uncrating of animals.
Liaises with outside agencies in regard to staff and animal management issues.
Oversees the management of animal demonstrations and animal outreach programs.
Assists in the planning, oversight and building of exhibit and holding areas, including graphics.
Consults with Veterinarians and Wildlife & Science Managers in matters relating to animal care.
Assists the Director of Wildlife Care in collection planning and the acquisition and disposition of animals.
Conducts special projects and prepares reports and performs other related duties as required by the Director of Wildlife Care.
Qualifications:
Must possess a degree or diploma in Animal Sciences or have the equivalent amount of training and related experience.
Must have 5-7 years progressive related experience, 2 at the supervisory level.
Must have supervisory or management experience in technical aspects of animal care as practised in zoological parks and gardens.
Experience in a unionized environment is preferred.
Must be familiar with current legislation, standards and practices in wildlife care.
A proven ability to effectively lead and motivate staff and to lead work teams.
Possess experience in the preparation and administration of an operating budget.
Must be knowledgeable in the use of computerized programs and systems, including Microsoft Office 365.
Well-developed interpersonal skills, along with strong communications skills including excellent writing skills and the ability to speak confidently in public.
Must have a working knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS legislation.
Must be able to work weekends and holidays.
Capable of meeting the physical demands of the position.
