Reid Park Zoological Society is seeking a Maintenance Supervisor. Three years supervisor experience in a zoo, aquarium, wildlife sanctuary, or animal exhibit contractor. Alternatively, supervisor experience in facilities, maintenance, or general contractor.

Overview:

The Maintenance Supervisor provides daily oversight and supervision of the Maintenance Department. This position provides direction to employees, establishes priorities, assigns tasks, schedules work projects, procures materials, manages inventory, and provides quality guest service. This is a hands-on position in a fast-paced environment of a rapidly growing organization. This is a FLSA salaried/ exempt, full time position.

Reports To: Facilities Manager

General Duties
• Responsible for accurate recording keeping pertaining to routine equipment and facility.
• Ensures that all buildings, exhibits, structures, etc. are in good condition and meet, or exceed, all governmental and AZA standards.
• Oversee routine maintenance and new construction, of buildings, public facilities, animal exhibits, support systems, walkways, barriers etc.
• Ensures staff and others, safely use and maintain hand tools and power tools (e.g., mowers, blowers, power-washers, chainsaws, etc.).
• Oversees repairs to artificial rockwork, trees, vines, water features, sculptures, etc. from cement products.
• Safely operates golf carts, utility vehicles, riding mowers, skid steers, forklifts, tractors, and equipment pulled behind vehicles.
• Oversees or performs preventative maintenance on all equipment.
• Ensures staff, interns, volunteers and others are utilizing the appropriate personal protection equipment.
• Maintains sufficient inventory of common supplies and tools in order to quickly repair systems, equipment, facilities and furnishings.
• Participates in the preparation of specifications for competitive bids for repair work, remodeling, and new construction.
• Assists in estimating costs and feasibility for various maintenance and new construction projects.
• Ensures new employees receive adequate on-boarding training.
• Assists Facilities Manager with evaluating in-house and outsourced services (e.g., specification review), ensuring standards of performance and outcomes are met according to agreements/ best practice.
• Makes timely decisions, exhibits sound and accurate judgement, supports and explains reasoning for decisions, and includes appropriate people in decision-making.
• Participates in supporting the zoo’s Association of Zoos and Aquariums ongoing and re-accreditation efforts.
· Maintains an efficient work order system for repairs or construction of facilities or equipment, ensuring they are completed in a timely manner.
· Manages work orders for repair and maintenance projects, prioritizes and makes determination on whether projects are completed in-house or outsourced.
· Inspects and is responsible for the efficient and proper working order of all exhibits, barriers, buildings, furnishings, equipment, walkways, etc. Including, but not limited to, the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, waste and storm water, lighting, rides, etc.
· Ensures zoo facilities are kept clean, in good repair and are aesthetically pleasing.
· Works within approved budgets, conserves resources, develops and implements cost savings measures, and contributes to revenue development.

Security and Safety

· Proactively manage zoo exhibits and facilities to ensure animal, guest, and staff safety. Address or report unsafe conditions to the appropriate work units.
· Participate in animal safety team meetings and drills as requested.
· Ensure staff utilize and have access to the appropriate safety equipment and information on hazardous substances (e.g., MSDS notebook).

Education and Pre-requisites

Preferred Qualifications, Skills and Abilities

· Minimum high school education or GED required; Certificate or degree in construction management or similar desirable.
· Minimum of three (3) years in a supervisory position working for a zoo, aquarium, wildlife sanctuary, animal exhibit contractor, OR, facilities, maintenance, or general construction contractor desirable.
· Possession of a valid Arizona driver’s license required.
· Experience operating skid steers, forklifts, tractors desirable.
· Working knowledge of construction trades including plumbing, fencing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, welding, and animal enclosure construction.
· Ability to develop and sustain effective working relationships with managers, peers, volunteers, and subordinates.
· Self-motivated and results oriented.
· Well organized and possesses the ability to prioritize multiple on-going tasks.
· Ability to remain calm under pressure.
· Ability to read, analyze and interpret construction documents and hand-drawn schematics.
· Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Gmail, and willing learn new programs as required.
· Ability to use radio, telephone, and computer to communicate.
· Able to work in extreme environmental conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, etc.) for long periods of time, including exposure to soiled materials and light chemical substances.
· Ability to take direction and be quick to act or change direction as needed.
· Reliable and able to work an established schedule.
· Able to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 50+ lbs.). Comfortable walking, sitting, bending, and standing for long periods of time.
· Willing to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends, when required.

Compensation and benefits

The hiring range listed is $48,484 – $56,969 annually.
