Description
Position: Life Support Systems Technician II
Reports To: Life Support Systems Manager
Position Summary:
The Life Support Systems Technician is responsible for monitoring and maintaining all equipment that is associated with live animal exhibits. This includes pumps, sand filters, UV, ozone generators and other equipment that is critical to animal health. Duties include performing routine maintenance on aquatic exhibits, backwashing filters, conducting water changes and addition of chemicals to maintain water quality to pre-determined standards. LSST are also responsible for improving exhibits by modifying existing systems, and installing new equipment. The LSST will model an outstanding work ethic and have accountability for water quality and animal safety.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Maintain the highest level of quality as it relates to the aquarium’s public and exhibit image
• Perform inspections, preventative maintenance, routine upkeep, cleaning, and repair of all life support equipment
• Understand water chemistry reports and their relationships to life support systems
• Maintain accurate and detailed life support systems logs and records
• Assist with the design of life support systems for temporary holding tanks and future exhibits
• Assist in the making of sea water for marine systems
• Participate in special training and professional development opportunities as needed
• Inspect, monitor, repair, maintain and rebuild life support system equipment as required
• Work closely with the husbandry staff, other departments and volunteers
• Respond to emergencies as required
• Perform other duties as assigned
Education and Pre-requisites
Qualifications:
• A BS/BA degree in related field with at least one year paid experience
• Experience operating, maintaining, designing and building life support systems for marine and freshwater systems.
• Knowledge and ability to adhere to OSHA standards and proper use of personal protective equipment in an aquarium environment.
• Skilled in building and LSS plumbing and building codes
• Preferred certification – AALSO Operator Level I
Critical Skills/Competencies:
Knowledge of pumps, filters, fractionators, UV sterilizers, heat exchangers, ozone systems and automated control equipment. Strong demonstrated knowledge of water chemistry and monitoring in an aquarium environment. SCUBA certification from an internationally recognized training association. Ability to work in a team environment and have strong oral and written communication skills. Attention to detail and cleanliness are a must.
Physical Demands of the Job:

• The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 lbs and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds, stand for long periods of time and drive aquarium vehicles
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear
• The employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers to handle, reach or feel and manipulate objects or controls
• The employee is frequently required to sit, walk distances, climb, balance, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch and stand for long periods for time
Special Working Conditions:
You will be working around water, salt, power tools, and animals. Work may be performed at off-site locations, at night and or on weekends. Must be able to work in an industrial work environment including confined spaces and areas with low headroom and difficult access as well as with hazardous chemicals.
