Description
The National Aquarium is currently seeking a Director of Membership. The Director of Membership is responsible for directing the daily operations of the National Aquarium’s membership program. This key development leader is responsible for the design and implementation of a comprehensive program that engages the National Aquarium’s 22,000+ member households through events, strategic communications, and solicitations. The Director of Membership manages two direct reports and is responsible for in-direct seasonal and part-time staff. This leader is charged with utilizing market analytics and key metrics to create strategies to improve the membership program including retention, engagement, and acquisition. The Director of Membership reports to the Vice President of Individual Giving and works closely with all members of the Individual Giving Team.
Typical responsibilities include membership operations which includes managing all aspects of a comprehensive membership program, developing and implementing membership plans for retention of current members and growth or new member segments guided by the Aquarium’s strategic goals. This individual will also be responsible for direct marketing which includes working with internal and external partners to plan and implement strategic plans to retain and acquire high propensity members as well as being responsible for membership engagement, and team commitment.

Recently named one of Baltimore’s Best Places to Work, the National Aquarium opened in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1981 as a nonprofit aquatic education and conservation organization, the jewel of the city’s Inner Harbor redevelopment. With a mission to inspire conservation of the world’s aquatic treasures, it is considered one of the nation’s top three aquarium and has served more than 40 million guests since its opening.
Today, the Aquarium builds on a 30-year history of both local and global conservation initiatives to make a difference for species and ecosystems around the world. Through our National Aquarium Animal Rescue program, we directly engage in the rescue, care and rehabilitation of marine mammals and turtles. In addition, we participate in important research efforts to confront pressing ocean conservation issues, and in partnership with local, state and federal governments, to advocate for smarter policies. Whether through education, research, conservation action or advocacy, National Aquarium programs provide practical solutions for protecting marine life, our coasts and our oceans.
Education and Pre-requisites
Required to apply for this position, the candidate must have a bachelor’s degree; advanced degree preferred, a minimum of 5 years in development, with at least 3 of those years in a leadership role. This person should be creative, driven, and results-focused and must truly value the Aquarium’s commitment to our mission as well as having a sincere interest in stewarding donor relationships and investments, and a desire to work in a donor-centered development culture and produce products of exceptionally high quality. This individual must have strong interpersonal skills, and must have a demonstrated proven success in utilizing data analysis to build and maintain a complex membership program.
