Description

Essential Job Functions:
Responsible for the overall operation and supervision of the Horticulture Department, comprised of Horticulturists and Landscape crews. Duties include the development, implementation and on-going management of a departmental budget, staff/scheduling requirements and on-going maintenance of horticultural/landscape park elements. Participates in the development of plans for new construction.

Duties & Responsibilities:
•Manages the activity of the Horticulture Department and the coordination of activity with other functional areas (including snow removal activities).
•Responsible for the development and management of departmental budget.
•Responsible for development, implementation, procurement and management/maintenance of plant materials for public areas and animal exhibit enclosures.
•Establishes and maintains relationships with horticultural societies, garden clubs, zoological institutions, etc. for information exchange and volunteer activities.
•Responsible for the development, implementation and management of an inventory of Supplies and Equipment system for the department.
•Responsible for development, implementation and management of appropriate record keeping for Horticultural and departmental personnel records.
•Make recommendations concerning the hiring, promotion and termination of Horticultural staff.
•Will require working in all types of weather and conditions.

Education and Pre-requisites

Minimum Requirements:
•Must have minimum of 5 years’ experience Horticultural operations or similar experience.
•Bachelor’s degree in Botany or related field and/or commensurate experience in nursery, greenhouse or landscape operations.
•Must have minimum of 3 years’ supervisory experience.
•Must have experience with budgetary development and financial management.
•Ability to read and understand blue prints and schematic drawings.
•Must have ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing.
•Must have a valid driver’s license.
•24-hour on-call availability, as required.
•Must be able to work at either zoo as required.
•Able to lift and carry items over 50 lbs.
•Perform all other duties, as may be required.

Preferred Job Requirements:
•Advanced degree in Botany/Horticulture/Landscape architecture.
•3 years’ supervisory experience in Horticultural operations or similar supervisory/management position.
•Previous experience in a Botanical garden/zoological park or similar institutional setting.
