Description

General Summary: The Commissary Manager will direct and participate in the daily operations of the commissary complex and its staff.

Essential Functions:
Primary Function:

• Responsible for ordering products to stock the commissary to include produce, feeds, hay, and operating supplies;
• Research new products and equipment;
• Negotiate prices with vendors and solicit competitive bids in order to evaluate new or alternative products for possible use;
• Responsible for recording and identifying each department’s daily commissary order;
• Responsible for preparing and managing annual departmental budget;
• Responsible for performing regular inventory in accordance with established organizational standards;
• Responsible for working with commissary staff as needed by performing within the normal range of skilled commissary activities including receiving and delivering shipments, preparing orders, making zoo deliveries, removing manure, and performing general maintenance;
• Responsible for safe, effective, and hygienic management of manure removal, including working with city employees for effective and punctual bin removal;
• Responsible for maintaining a working knowledge of USDA, EPA pesticide regulations, and AZA standards and ensuring that all commissary buildings and work areas are in compliance;
• Responsible for maintaining a working knowledge of USDA, AZA, EPA pesticide regulations, and company safety policies, procedures, and protocols;
• Responsible for all travel to outside vendors to pick up orders and grocery items;
• Required to observe all rules of safety that pertain to the position, including use of personal protective equipment;
• Required to check, operate and, maintain equipment, vehicles, and commissary complex as necessary and established for the operation;
• Responsible for performing regular quality assurance checks including testing of hay quality and monitoring of produce freshness;
• Responsible for maintaining good inventory practices, including proper in-out stocking, expiration dating and monitoring, and overall quality control of products;
• Responsible for monitoring safety considerations for the purposes of identifying and correcting hazards;
• Responsible for processing and monitoring payroll;
• Promote the mission of The Maryland Zoo;
• Perform other duties as assigned; and,
• Adhere to all policies and procedures of the Zoo.

Communication (Internal and External):

• Communicate with Senior Veterinarian regarding animal diet needs and changes crucial to the ordering process; and,
• Communicate out-of-stock items, new products, daily work activities of the department, and changes to the delivery schedule to various Zoo departments and staff.

Management of Resources (financial, human resources, facilities):

• Cultivate, evaluate, and train staff, rendering discipline when necessary;
• Actively participate in the recruitment, hiring, and training of Commissary staff;
• Supervise all commissary staff;
• Maintain and update departmental standard operating procedures (SOP’s);
• Maintain USDA records and submit reports, purchase orders, procedure manuals, contracts, etc.; and
• Schedule, coordinate, and monitor the daily work activities for the commissary and prioritize work in progress.

Education and Pre-requisites

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in an animal or business related field.

Experience/Training:

• Minimum of two years in a supervisory position preferably related to the food/animal, warehouse, or purchasing industries;
• Ability to operate large equipment or the ability to be trained on such equipment;
• Experience with creating/maintaining a budget; and,
• Valid driver’s license.

Traits Desirable:

• Strong organizational and communications skills;
• Ability to handle non-routine tasks and adapts to changing circumstances;
• Basic understanding of animal nutrition and feeding practices is preferred; and,
• Fully developed skills with Microsoft Word, Excel.

Equipment:

• Must be able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including computer, telephone, radio, vehicles, skid steer, back hoe, bob cat, golf cart, hand tools, meat cutter, scales; etc.

Working Conditions:

• Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of up to 75 pounds and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work; must be able to remain on feet for periods of time, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, pull, climb and balance;
• Must be able to travel large areas of the Zoo as needed;
• Must be able to work in an outdoor weather environment in all seasons and weather, including heat/humidity, cold temperatures, and/or wet conditions;
• Ability to work a flexible schedule to include weekends, holidays, and special events;
• Ability to be an essential staff member and report to work in all weather conditions;
• Exposure to zoonotic diseases and risk of animal attack; and,
• Vaccinations required.
