Description

The Chief of Education and Engagement (CEE) is responsible for providing strategic leadership and oversight of Fresno Chaffee Zoos central mission, elements of education, DEIA+ commitment, and community engagement. This position actively participates in organization-wide policy decisions, strategic planning and staff training while working to establish Fresno Chaffee Zoo as one of the premier attractions and event destinations in the Central Valley. Operationally, the CEE oversees the mutually reinforcing aspects of our work that are centered in DEIA+: Conservation Education, Community Engagement, and Government Affairs.

Our comprehensive compensation package includes Medical/Dental/Vision, Employee Assistance Program, 401k, 10 Paid Holidays, Paid Sick and Paid Vacation time on an accrued basis. The minimum pay for this position is $110,000. Offers will be based on the successful candidate’s experience.

Essential Functions

Provide oversight, leadership and direction to develop synergies in Community Outreach, Education, and Government Affairs to reinforce a comprehensive organization-wide strategic diversity, equity, access, and inclusion (DEAI) program.
Ensure cross-functional coordination and integration to increase the effectiveness and relevance of the Zoos mission initiatives internally and externally.
Assess, implement, and lead the development of priorities, goals, strategies, operating plans, budgets, and metrics for the execution and assessment of the Zoos efforts in DEIA+, Education, Community Outreach and Partnerships, and Government Affairs.
Create and oversee a budget for DEAI programs and training for the organization.
Lead the Zoos Community Partnerships Conservation Pillar. Work with the Manager of Community Outreach to develop and implement community programs, DEIA+ efforts, and events. Analyze and control expenditures to ensure compliance with department budgets.
Provide leadership oversight to the Education Department including programs, camps, conservation interpreters, volunteers and interns. Work with the Director of Learning to develop long-range strategic plans and short-term annual plans to guide the design, implementation, and evaluation of all on-site and off-site educational programs, ensuring that educational topics, activities, and events are relevant and engaging for the Zoos diverse audience.
Work with the Director of Learning to develop and implement operating budgets for all educational programs and events. Analyze and control Education expenditures to ensure compliance with department budgets.
Work with Government Affairs staff to build relationships with Federal, state and local officials to promote the purpose of our Zoo and build community support. Outreach to develop and implement potential government funding sources. Analyze and control expenditures to ensure compliance with department budgets.
Work with the Director of Human Resources to develop and implement internal DEAI+ efforts, training, retention and recruitment of FCZ staff.
Serve as a member of the Executive Leadership Team
Actively participates in Board meetings and other meetings as required.

Remains accessible to the Zoo staff by cell phone. Uses professional courtesy and only call/texts on day off in the event of an emergency.
Provides regular performance feedback to reporting staff. Completes timely and appropriate written evaluations that highlight strengths and areas for improvement.

Education and Pre-requisites

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements:

Bachelors degree in Education, Biology or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum of five years of managerial experience
Minimum five years related experience in educational program design and implementation. Experience in an AZA facility strongly preferred.
Demonstrated commitment and record of achievement in organizational efforts to establish effective DEIA+ efforts
Strong verbal and written English communications skills required. Bilingual (Spanish or Hmong) communication skills a plus.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite is required.
Strong planning, analytical and decision making skills are required, with the ability to work in a dynamic, evolving organization.
Demonstrates motivational and problem solving acumen with a high degree of integrity and ethics.
Possesses the ability to articulate and inspire support for a vision of the future

Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. The employee must convey detailed or important spoken information to others in individual and small group settings.
Hand and finger dexterity sufficient for typing and other administrative tasks.
The employee is regularly required to lift and/or carry up to 10 pounds, and occasionally up to 25 pounds.
Work Environment

The position functions primarily indoors, with occasional exposure to outdoor heat and cold.
Occasional local travel may be required.
