Education and Pre-requisites
As a Camp and Specialty Programs Counselor Assistant, you must work 80% of the weeks that summer Zoo Camp is in session as well as attend all required trainings in the weeks prior to camp starting. Camp programs run from June through August, training takes place in May. The work schedule for Zoo Camp is generally Monday through Friday, 7 hours per day, based on camper enrollment. The work schedule for Safari Sleepovers is generally spring and fall, Friday evenings through Saturday mornings.
Starting pay $12.00 per hour. This position contributes to the success of the Chicago Zoological Society by connecting children, youth, and families to wildlife and nature through our Zoo Camps and meeting the Society’s goal of providing extraordinary guest experiences with top-quality programming.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
• Provide support to Camp and NatureStart Programs Counselors with the supervision of campers throughout the park during camp activities.
• Engage campers in games and activities that develop motor skills, socialization skills, and teach respect, responsibility, and good decision-making skills.
• Assist and when called upon, lead the presentation of camp topics and themes by utilizing specimens and props.
• Coordinate with Seasonal Camp and NatureStart Programs Counselor staff the organization of all daily camp supplies for activities including arts and crafts and games.
Work with other camp staff members to supervise groups of children for bathroom breaks in accordance with American Camp Association requirements.
The requirements for this position include the following:
• Minimum two years of high school required.
• Must be a minimum of 16 years of age.
• Experience working in a team environment required.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills required.
• Strong organizational skills required.
• Experience and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience.
The preferred qualifications:
• Six or more months of experience working or volunteering with children of different ages strongly desired.
• One year within the King Conservation Scholars program at the Society or one year experience in a camp leader in training program (LIT/CIT) or youth leadership program desired.
• Three or more months experience working or volunteering with children of different ages, in a formal or informal education setting (e.g., camp, park district, Special Recreation Association, day care, student teaching, school, or cultural institution) strongly desired.
• Multilingual ability, Spanish fluency a plus.
Additional Information: This is a temporary position and may be filled as an important rung of the Career Ladder program which creates opportunities to inspire conservation leadership in diverse youth. Enrollment in the Career Ladder program is not required, but it is highly preferred. Incumbent must display a positive attitude and be a positive role model to program participants while providing a safe, fun, and positive learning environment for program participants. Must represent the Chicago Zoological Society in an appropriate and professional manner at all times.
