Description
The San Francisco Zoological Society (“Society”) is a non-profit institution that manages and raises funds for San Francisco Zoo and Gardens (“Zoo”). The Society’s mission, supra, is summarized as the 3 c’s: to connect our visitors with wildlife so that they care about nature and ultimately conserve it. The Society’s leadership team is comprised of a President & Executive Director as well as a professional team of Senior Managers. The Society endeavors to meet or exceed the standards of its industry peers, including those established by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (“AZA”). For over 25 years, the Society has been continuously accredited by the AZA.
SUMMARY: The goal of this internship is to support ongoing and developing animal wellness studies.
• The intern’s role is to support ongoing and developing animal wellness studies. This support is provided through behavioral and survey data collection and collation of these data. This may occur through the use of interviews, observations, records assessment, etc.
• Interns may also develop reports for “data clients.” These clients may include other wellness staff, veterinary staff, curators, etc. May perform data entry and statistical analysis.
• Assist with coordination of student volunteer work as requested and directed.
• Assist with the development and testing of animal enrichment items. Work with other stakeholders as needed.
• Interns are expected to represent the society in a professional and friendly manner at all times. Interacts with Zoo guests courteously and offers proper attention at all times.
• Perform other duties as requested or directed.
QUALIFICATIONS: College level coursework in biology, zoology, ecology, or related area; Ability to present information to groups and career interest in animal welfare and animal behavior research. OTHER QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum age requirement is 18 years.
EDUCATION: High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
EXPERIENCE: Previous experience collecting behavioral data preferred. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: A valid driver’s license.
