Animal Care & Training Husbandry Assistant
(Full Time, Permanent)

Dolphin Research Center is a not-for-profit education and research facility dedicated to teaching, learning and caring about marine mammals and the environment we share.

Position Responsibilities:

The Husbandry Assistant oversees the quality of fish fed to the dolphins and sea lions and is responsible for the maintenance and cleanliness of the food prep area and all equipment. The Husbandry Assistant also works alongside volunteers and students at times, directing and teaching them how to assist in certain aspects of the job. Additionally, he/she will assist the Animal Care and Training staff with various daily duties.

This is an entry-level position into the Animal Care and Training department. Once food prep duties are mastered, the Husbandry Assistant may learn basic animal feeding and handling.

Major responsibilities of this position may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Daily fish preparation for dolphins and sea lions.
• Vitamin and medication preparation.
• Work with and teach volunteers and/or other assistants in husbandry duties.
• Maintain day to day cleanliness of food prep area that meets or exceeds government standards.
• Maintenance and ordering of cleaning supplies.
• Responsible for daily inventory of fish supply.
• Work directly with Animal Care and Habitat to prepare for fish deliveries.
• Work closely with Medical Department staff in relation to any food fish and /or food prep issues.
• Support ACT department when necessary.

Abilities and Skills:

• Serious applicants should be detail oriented, hard working and dedicated to providing the highest standard of care to our dolphin and sea lion family.
• Must be a team player with excellent organization, problem solving and communication skills.
• The position requires a physically fit individual who can lift a minimum of 50 pounds and must pass a swim test.
• Prior experience with diet prep or animals may be beneficial.
