Description
Candidate is responsible for executive leadership and daily management of a six-acre municipal zoo. Must possess strong strategic thinking, fundraising, project management, marketing and public relations skills in addition to demonstrated financial and animal management skills. Candidate will oversee a staff of eight full-time, approximately 25 part-time and seasonal employees, and numerous volunteers and interns. The animal collection consists of nearly 200 specimens representing 90 species. Candidate is responsible for the continued planning and implementation of the zoo’s master plan and will work closely with advisory, non-profit boards, and a variety of community partners. Attaining AZA accreditation within the next three years is one of the zoo’s primary goals. Engages with customers and the general public. All other duties as assigned.
Education and Pre-requisites
Must be at least 18 years of age. A minimum of five years’ experience in zoo operations/management and 5-7 years supervisory/leadership experience preferred. A Bachelor’s degree in zoology, management or related field is required. Must possess demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and work with a team to achieve goals. Must possess strong interpersonal skills and have demonstrated experience with management functions such as planning, developing/administering a budget, etc. Successful experience with fund development is preferred. Must be familiar with guidelines from various regulatory agencies such as USDA, APHIS, USFWS, AZA, OSHA, State Board of Accounts, etc. Familiarity with established zoological practices and standards is preferred. Must have an enthusiastic and engaging personality, be highly organized, and have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must possess ability to thrive in a team-setting amidst frequent distractions and interruptions. Must enjoy working around children and animals. Ability to effectively communicate and coordinate orally and in writing with various community partners, boards, other City departments, vendors, customers, members, funding and regulatory agencies, and the public including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities. Ability to obtain Certification in CPR and First Aid. Must be able to meet attendance requirements and have the ability to work extended, weekend and/or evening hours and occasionally travel for seminars or programs. Must possess valid Indiana driver’s license and demonstrated safe driving record.
Compensation and benefits
$1,983.56 to $2,285.17/bi-weekly
