HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION

The Wildlife Nutrition Fellow will participate in day-to-day activities of the Nutrition Services department that would include the dietary management, clinical nutrition problem solving, and contribution to in situ and ex situ conservation project endeavors for both the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. This position reports to the Senior Wildlife Nutritionist.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Assist with dietary management under supervision of a Nutritionist, including communication with animal teams, documentation of current practices, review of past practices and/or animal natural history, body condition scoring of animals, diet formulation, nutritional evaluation and review of dietary acceptance.
Assist with quality control evaluations of feed items, including feed sample collection and preparation, photographic documentation and measurement of current feed items, and nutrient analysis data entry.
Participate in research endeavors for in situ and ex situ projects, including data collection, data entry, animal behavioral observations, research sample collection and processing, data analysis, writing, and presentation.
Attend meetings as appropriate, including discussions of dietary management, problem solving clinical cases, and research development.
Fellow will interact with a diversity of professionals, from nutritionists and dietary preparation staff to animal care staff, clinical DVMs, pathology DVMs, education teams, and more.
On the job training will be provided; however, applicants with experience in these areas should highlight them in their application materials.
Utilize Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Word) and other computer programs.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

A candidate that is enthusiastic for professional growth and learning within the Wildlife Nutrition field. Fellows must be available to work Full-Time approximately 40 hours per week for the duration of the six month fellowship (June 2022 – December 2022). Some weekends and holidays may be required. Must be able to commute between both locations as we do not provide transportation.

JOB EXPERIENCE
Examples of representative qualifications include the enrollment in a post-secondary education program which is applicable to the assigned job duties or have completed post-secondary education. Some assignments may require a valid California driver license.
EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS
Undergraduate student (Junior or Senior), recent college graduate (in the last 12 months), or current graduate student with a specific interest in exotic animal nutrition.
Enrolled in or have a degree in Animal Science, Biology, Nutrition, Wildlife Science, or a related field.
Completed an introductory Animal Nutrition class which could include livestock, in situ or ex situ Wildlife Species, Pet Species, and/or Human Nutrition courses.
