Description

The purpose of this job is to supervise daily operations of a zoological park. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to park and facility management and maintenance, facility planning, program and services development, program evaluation, report and budget preparation, volunteer training, public relations functions, supervising and training assigned employees, preparing long and short-term goals, instructing classes, coordinating program publicity and performing additional tasks as assigned.

Job Related Requirements

WORK SCHEDULE: Typically 8:30am to 5:30 pm weekdays; frequent weekend and evening hours necessary depending on events and programs. On-call to address animal emergencies.

May be required to work on religious holidays.

Regular and predictable attendance is required.

Must work cooperatively with others.

When requirements include vehicle operation, responsible for the safety, readiness and operation of the vehicle and must abide by ACC’s safe driving policy.

The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Performs routine grounds and facility management and maintenance; inspects facilities for damage or safety problems on a routine basis.

Supervises contract laborers, employees, community service workers, and volunteers who perform a wide array of duties. Handles employee concerns, directs work assignments, counsels and disciplines employees when necessary, and completes assigned employee and volunteer performance appraisals.

Takes responsibility for the management of all aspects of a captive wildlife collection including, but not limited to, diet formulation and preparation, animal medication administration, exhibit design and maintenance, veterinary and animal health issues, and creates and maintains an effective behavioral enrichment program for the collection.

Administers state and federal wildlife exhibition permits to ensure compliance with federal, state and local laws.

Uses animal capture and restraining/tranquilizing equipment when needed.

Assists with the development and application of operational standards for facilities, special events and programs.

Acts as liaison with University of Georgia’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital staff to ensure high standard of care for the zoo’s captive wildlife collection.

Works with other staff to plan, develop, and implement general and environmental education programs and special events for all age groups; designs, creates and prints related publicity and program materials.

Develops and manages animal care volunteer program, to include training, staff training manuals, informational brochures, and newsletters for the general public.

Assists in the preparation of annual budget for facility; monitors expenditures and revenues under current budget.

Collects and maintains records including receipts, facility attendance, safety inspections, educational programs, etc.; compiles data for reports as needed.

Purchases necessary materials and supplies for park operations.

Drafts, assists with, and maintains written contracts.

Assists in the development of short- and long-term facility goals and objectives; schedules work to meet established deadlines.

Assists with the development and application of park rules, procedures, guidelines and policies.

Prepares office correspondence as required.

Performs other related duties as required.

Education and Pre-requisites

Bachelor’s degree in course of study related to occupational field and two years of related experience in animal capture, wildlife biology, husbandry practices, exhibit construction, park administration, park management or related field required or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

One year supervisory experience required.

Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Must be certified in First Aid/CPR or have ability to attain within 6 months of employment.

Experience planning and implementing programs in a natural resources setting preferred.

Must complete Community Service Supervisory training through the Athens-Clarke County Probation office within 6 months of employment.

$45,990.00 Annually
