POSITION SUMMARY:
One full time position is available. The work week for this position is flexible; days and shifts will vary due to program needs.

Another part-time (20 hours per week) position may also become available shortly after the application deadline for this position.

Owned and operated by Metro Regional Government, the Oregon Zoo has an annual attendance of over 1.6 million visitors. The zoo located along the MAX light rail line, just minutes from downtown Portland, is highly regarded nationally, regionally and locally. The Oregon Zoo is home to over 2,000 animals representing 279 species of amphibians, birds, fish, invertebrates and mammals.

As a member of the Program Animal care team, this position provides daily care for the Zoo’s ambassador animal collection, trains and supports youth and adult volunteers, schedules animals for education program use, and works within the parameters of the Oregon Zoo’s animal care and handling guidelines. The Program Animal staff support a variety of programs, such as interpretive animal demonstrations, guided tours, school programs, media appearances and other conservation education opportunities.

The Program Animal Specialist in this position works hands-on with a variety of animal species, such as reptiles, invertebrates, birds and mammals, including exotic and potentially dangerous animals. They will present a wide variety of conservation education programs for diverse audiences, as well as participate in caring for and training the animals used in these presentations. Program Animal Specialists will perform daily husbandry duties, including animal training; maintaining records relating to health, diet and behavior; and observing and communicating animal health with veterinary staff. Supervision is received from the Program Animal Curator and requires close collaboration with the other Program Animal Specialists, Animal Keepers, and Education Program Coordinators.

Education and Pre-requisites

Associates degree in field related to program area and 2 years experience, or HS diploma and four (4) years of experience in a field related to the position; or any combination of experience and education that provides the necessary skills, knowledge and ability to perform assigned tasks may be substituted. Requires a valid driver’s license.
