Description

The City of San Jose is recruiting to fill multiple full-time, benefited and part-time, unbenefited vacancies for Zoo Keeper positions at Happy Hollow Park & Zoo and Emma Prusch Farm Park. The positions involve the care and feeding of non-domestic and/or domestic animals, enclosure, grounds and service area maintenance, preparing animals for public presentations, capture & restraint, basic husbandry, behavioral enrichment and training. Additional duties include responding to general questions from the public and performing scheduled and impromptu Keeper talks. These positions will be required to work weekend, evening and holidays under all types of climatic conditions and must have the ability to enter animal areas and perform physical work, including lifting up to 50 lbs.

Education and Pre-requisites

Education: Completion of high school diploma or equivalent General Educational Development (G.E.D.) certificate or California Proficiency Certificate.
Experience: One year (equivalent to 2080 hours) of experience in the care of non-domestic animals.
Acceptable substitutions: College coursework in zoology, biology, or related field can substitute for required experience on a year-for-year basis. One year of coursework is equivalent to 30 semester units/45 quarter units.
Possession or ability to acquire a valid California Drivers License may be required.

Compensation and benefits

The Zoo keeper classification starting salary is $19.63/hr. However, the City of San Jose offers a living wage starting at $23.31 which would be implemented.
