Description

The zoo supervisor is responsible for supervising the care of zoo animals and facilities, as well as organizing zoo projects and programs. Fills in for the Park and Zoo Director in their absence.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Assigns duties to zoo keepers and facilitates safety training and employee education.
Assists with and coordinates zoo maintenance, including exhibit repairs, fence repairs, and facility improvement.
Organizes special projects, group tours, internships, educational classes, project planning, and the zoo master plan.
Acquires and maintains Association of Zoos and Aquariums accreditation.
Selects and recommends new employees.
Recommends terminations and disciplinary action.
Keeps animal welfare/veterinary records, daily reports, and pursues federal and state permits/licenses.
Assists in preparation of zoo budget.
Provides mentally and physically-enriching activities for the animals.
Fills in for the Park and Zoo Director in their absence.
Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Knowledge of current animal husbandry practices, zoo safety practices, state/federal laws pertaining to exotic animals and zoos.
Ability to keep and organize records.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, employees, and other departments and agencies.
Ability to supervise subordinates.
Ability to network with other zoo professionals through conferences and meeting.
Ability to receive training outside the animal field, such as supervisory and safety training.

Working Conditions:

Work involves frequent exposure to unpleasant elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, loud noises, chemicals, etc.

Education and Pre-requisites

Bachelor’s degree in animal science, zoo science, zoology, or a related field required.
Three years of supervisory experience required; four years preferred.
If selected, applicant must apply for a Kansas driver’s license.
Must be available to work nights, overtime, and weekends.

Physical Requirements

Intense physical effort is required. Individual must be able to sit, stand, walk, carry, climb, push, pull, reach, grasp, speak, and listen for extended periods of time.

Compensation and benefits

The starting salary for this position is $17.53 per hour plus benefits.
