Description
We’re on a quest to make Boise the most livable city in the country and are looking for a Zoo Operations Manager to join our innovative staff at Zoo Boise. Located in the heart of Boise’s downtown parks and greenbelt system, Zoo Boise was accredited for the fourth time in September 2017 by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Manages day-to-day animal care operations performed by Zoo Keepers and maintenance staff at Zoo Boise. Interacts with public including zoo visitors and news media personnel in order to provide information regarding special activities, attractions, and education program presentations. Ensures compliance with Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accreditation standards and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) requirements. Manages the zoo in the absence of the Zoo Director and Assistant Director.
Education and Pre-requisites
Requirements
Requires education and/or experience to attain the following:
Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or related field, and five years animal care experience with two years in a supervisory and/or management capacity, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Functional knowledge of all aspects of animal care for mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and birds including husbandry, animal behavior, nutrition, reproductive physiology and animal diseases; proper care, feeding, habitat and special needs of animals; principles of effective supervision; correct use of specialized equipment such as blow and dart guns, shot guns, immobilizing drugs, control poles and squeeze cages; dangers and precautions to be taken when handling animals; enrichment and husbandry training; budget development and reporting; spreadsheet, database and word processing programs.
Ability to effectively plan, train and manage work of those engaged in animal care and facility maintenance; follow-up on work assignments and evaluate the work of others; evaluate animal behavior; care for and control a wide variety of exotic and domestic animals; handle potentially dangerous animals; interpret and comply with federal laws, regulations, and AZA requirements regarding animal welfare, conservation, education, grounds maintenance, safety, training and animal behavior enrichment; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; independently research problems, conduct studies, and prepare issue analysis; keep records and prepare reports; display an attitude of cooperation and work harmoniously with all levels of City employees, the general public and other organizations; communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; complete assignments in a timely fashion; understand and comply with all rules, policies and regulations; maintain prompt and regular attendance; perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation.
Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record.
Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
Ten years animal care experience with five years in a supervisory capacity in an AZA accredited zoo. Experience working with TAGs (Taxon Advisory Groups), SSPs (Species Survival Plans) and studbook keepers.
Compensation and benefits
Based on the skills and qualifications of the successful candidate, the City offers between $56,000 to $65,000 as a starting annual salary and amazing benefits.
