Description

Performs daily routine duties of the zoo and raptor center, such as diet preparation and feeding. Develops and implements behavioral enrichment programs. Monitors animal behavior and appearance for health purposes. Assists with veterinary care and procedures as necessary. Maintains records of animals regarding health, diet, behavioral characteristics, etc. using prescribed computer database. Conducts zoo tours, talks, and outreach programs. Follows guidelines and regulations set forth by USDA and AZA. Cleans exhibits and displays. Must have knowledge of animal husbandry including feeding and nutrition, record-keeping, animal capture and restraint, and safety; good oral and written communication skills; good interpersonal skills; and knowledge of operant conditioning and/or environmental enrichment skills as well as basic computer knowledge for research and daily reporting.

Education and Pre-requisites

A Bachelor’s Degree in biology or zoology or a closely related field is preferred. Would consider graduation from a two-year technical or community college with a degree in Zoo Animal Technology or other related curriculum. At least one year of animal care experience in a zoo or related facility or an equivalent combination of training and experience is desired. Will also require a valid Kansas driver’s license.
