Description

The Spring Internship at Randall Oak Zoo goes from March 20th to June 19th (end date may vary depending on schedule). Interns must complete 300 hours over the course of 10 to 12 weeks, making for an average of 25 hours a week. Interns will get to pick their schedule at the beginning of the internship but must be flexible with the ability to work weekdays, weekends, and holidays. Depending on the length of your shifts picked you will be working 3 to 4 days a week.
Interns will gain valuable work experience while working with keepers to help in the daily care and operations in the zoo including but not limited to diet prep, feeding, cleaning, assisting in husbandry care, light maintenance and construction, observations, enrichment, and training. Randall Oaks Zoo is a small zoo which is home to over 160 different animals and is open to the public seasonally from April to December. Internships completed while the park is open to the public will also include assisting in educational presentations and interacting with the public. During the course of your internship you will be required to complete two enrichment projects, one training project, and a final project the will impact the zoo in a positive way.

Education and Pre-requisites

The following are requirements to be eligible for this internship:
– Must be either a recent graduate of college (within the last 3 years), or current college student in a degree in the related field.
– Be capable of the physical abilities required to work in the zoo (e.g. lift 50 pounds, frequent bending and stooping, working outside in the elements, etc.)
– Be capable of standing for extended periods of time and working in an outdoor environment under any weather condition.
– Ability to work without direct supervision
– Ability to follow both oral and written direction
– Ability to work the schedule agreed upon
– Ability to interact positively with the public, especially to give them information about the animals and the zoo
– Ability to responsibly use and maintain zoo equipment and tools
– Must be at least 18 years of age
– Candidates must submit and pass a background check
– Have a valid driver’s license

Compensation and benefits

This is an unpaid internship and no housing is provided.
