This position is located in the Department of Wildlife Health Sciences (WHS), National Zoological Park (NZP), Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. The incumbent’s duties include: (1) providing veterinary technical support in the delivery of health care to a wide variety of non-domestic collection animals located at NZP; (2) completing veterinary tasks and (3) providing clinical laboratory support as a diagnostic tool for health care to insure the proper functioning of the WHS’s Veterinary Hospital and the medical programs in place at NZP.
*Assists the staff veterinarians and consultants in the broad areas of animal anesthesia, treatment, surgery, dentistry, radiology and preventative medicine.
*Administers medication both orally and by injection as prescribed by veterinary staff, ensuring accurate calculations of fluid volumes and doses.
*Monitors hospital equipment on a regularly scheduled and documented basis for general upkeep and repair; and notifies proper offices and agencies when service for any equipment is warranted.
*Provides supportive care and administers prescribed treatments to animals housed in the veterinary hospital or quarantine areas.
*Inspects and monitors all hospitalized or quarantined animals at specific times to insure proper care, well being and security of animals in enclosures, and assure prompt reporting of illness or abnormal behavior.
*Administers prescribed treatments, medications and/or nutritional supplements to animals in the hospital and in the grounds of the NZP; Dispensing prescribed veterinary products following standard operating procedures.
*Assists in hand-raising, tube feeding or force feeding animals.
*Assists in the maintenance of medical records.

Certified, Registered, or Licensed Veterinary Technician
Compensation and benefits
$54,972 to $71,467 per year
