Description
Job Summary:
The Birmingham Zoo is seeking a qualified candidate for a full-time licensed veterinary technician position. The Birmingham Zoo is located in Birmingham, Al and is home to over 800 animals of 250 different species. Our veterinary department consists of 2 full time veterinarians, 2 full time licensed veterinary technicians, and 2 full time hospital/quarantine keepers. This position is for the 2nd licensed veterinary technician.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Participation and management of the cases under supervision of the veterinarians.
Participation in necropsies and anesthesia.
Equipment use and maintenance (Digital radiography, ultrasound, endoscopy, microscope, blood machines).
Management and entry of patient records(anesthesia records, laboratory results, fecal results) in ZIMS
Calculating, filling, compounding, and administering prescriptions
Performing necessary medical treatments for animals within the collection
Proficient in laboratory techniques (fecal analysis, urinalysis, hematology(including avian and reptile CBCs), water testing, and cytology)
Responsible for capturing, crating, and transferring animals using appropriate restraint and handling techniques designed to put the least amount of stress on the animal.
Assisting with inventory
Preparing and packaging various samples for shipment
Familiarity with the protocols for handling Class II narcotics and all controlled substances
Assist in animal care and husbandry of hospitalized patients
Other duties as assigned.
Education and Pre-requisites
Graduate from an AVMA accredited veterinary technology program
Licensed (CVT, RVT or LVT) and able to obtain an Alabama license within 3 months of employment
At least 1 year paid experience in a veterinary hospital. Experience with exotics and zoo animals in an AZA accredited zoo is preferred
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Able to work independently as well as a member of a team with minimal supervision
Able to practice good time management, organization, and prioritizing skills
Must have a current valid driver’s license with no prior traffic violations (within the last five years).
Must have current negative TB test and provide documentation, or be willing to have a TB test.
Must be First aid/CPR certified or willing to be trained and certified.
