Overview

We are currently seeking an individual to perform a variety of clinical technical medical and laboratory work, with additional registrar and animal training facilitation opportunities, to support the operations of the Zoo. Desirable technical skills include, but are not limited to, animal husbandry, anesthesia, treatment, radiology, clinical pathology, preventive health, and necropsy. The successful candidate will be joining the Director of Medicine and Conservation Projects in caring for the animal collection and contributing to research objectives, while also acting as a primary caretaker for quarantined and hospitalized animals. Additionally, this position will assist the keepers in training animals for medical procedures, specifically for Sumatran tigers and giraffes. Excellent communication skills are essential, as the successful candidate will have limited responsibilities for registrar tasks.

Principal Duties:

* Perform routine laboratory work including fecal parasite analysis, complete blood count, and serum/plasma biochemistry.
* Assist veterinarians in all aspects of animal health care including but not limited to: animal health examinations, preventative health care procedures, diagnostic procedures, treatments, and necropsy.
* Maintain veterinary medical equipment, inventory and hospital.
* Assist in the husbandry, care and treatment of clinical cases, quarantined animals, the giraffe herd, and tiger family.
* Communicate with other AZA-accredited institutions, zoos, and animal program leaders to coordinate animal acquisitions and departures.
* Perform other duties as assigned within the division or department.
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public and Zoo employees at all levels.
* Strong teamwork and communication skills.
* Enthusiasm for institutional mission, vision and conservation goals. Responsible for creating an environment where animals are given the greatest opportunity to exhibit natural behaviors.

Education and Pre-requisites

Minimum Requirements

* At least 1 year of experience working with zoological or exotic pet species.
* Valid Nebraska Veterinary Technician license or ability to obtain one within 3 months of start date.
* An expectation to continue to seek and acquire education/knowledge in the field is essential.
* Valid Nebraska driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 3 months of start date.
