Are you a skilled veterinary technician with experience working with zoo and exotic animals?

Do you want to be part of a team supporting the Oregon Zoo’s groundbreaking conversation and education efforts?
The Oregon Zoo has an opening for a Veterinary Technician who will function as a vital member of the veterinary care team in our state-of-the-art Veterinary Medical Center. Our ideal candidate has the skills necessary to successfully assist the veterinarians with a variety of technical duties, including anesthesia monitoring, diagnostics and imaging, clinical procedures, emergency services, hematology, triage and treatment on a wide range of zoo animal species.

In this role, you will also be responsible for behavior training, filling prescriptions, record keeping, facilities and equipment maintenance, and performing hospital animal keeper services.

Education and Pre-requisites

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
• Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in a veterinary science-related field AND
• The equivalent of three years of full-time professional animal care veterinary technician experience that is current and includes significant experience monitoring anesthesia; OR
• Any combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the classification duties and responsibilities.

Additional Requirements:
• Current Oregon CVT license in good standing, or the ability to transfer a current license to Oregon within six months of hire.
• Medical testing and/or immunizations may be required as the duties of this position may require close contact with animal areas and enclosures where animals may be present.
• A valid driver’s license and the ability to be insured under Metro’s insurance policy.

Preferred Qualifications:
• At least three years of experience as a full-time veterinary technician in an AZA-accredited institution
• At least two years of full-time experience in clinical laboratory of non-domestic species with emphasis in avian and herptile hematology
• Certification as Veterinary Technician Specialist in Zoo Medicine or ability to qualify for Zoo-Med certification within 3 years

Compensation and benefits

Salary: $25.10 – $32.05 hourly
