INTRODUCTION

This position is in the Dept. of Wildlife Health Sciences (WHS) at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park (NZP) in Washington, DC. The incumbent performs duties: (1) provide veterinary technical support in the delivery of health care to a wide variety of non-domestic collection animals; (2) complete veterinary tasks and (3) provide clinical laboratory support as a diagnostic tool for health care to insure the proper functioning of the WHS’s Veterinary Hospital and the medical programs.

MAJOR DUTIES
1. Assists staff veterinarians and consultants in the broad areas of animal anesthesia, treatment, surgery, dentistry, radiology and preventative medicine.

2. Administers medication both orally and by injection as prescribed by veterinary staff, ensuring accurate calculations of fluid volumes and doses.

3. Monitors hospital equipment on a regularly scheduled and documented basis for general upkeep and repair; and notifies proper offices and agencies when service for any equipment is warranted.

4. Provides supportive care and administers prescribed treatments to animals housed in the veterinary hospital or quarantine areas.

5. Inspecting and monitoring of all hospitalized or quarantined animals at specific times to insure proper care, wellbeing and security of animals in enclosures, and assure prompt reporting of illness or abnormal behavior.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
1. Possession of a licensed, registered, or certified veterinary technician (LVT, RVT or CVT) certificate is required.

2. This position requires considerable walking, standing, heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs.), stooping, and other types of physical effort and dexterity in moving and distributing animals, animal feed, cage materials, equipment, and in opening and closing cage doors and gates. Although safety measures are taken, there is always a hazard of injury in working with exotic and unpredictable animals, which may be harboring zoonotic infections.

3. Skill working as a veterinary technician in an AZA accredited Zoo (or similar) setting.

4. Ability to perform veterinary clinical support duties on zoo and exotic species.

5. Ability to operate and maintain veterinary laboratory equipment, and fill and dispense veterinary prescriptions and products related to zoo (or similar) animals.

6. Ability to perform veterinary clinical laboratory testing.

7. Ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment.

Education and Pre-requisites

Possession of a licensed, registered, or certified veterinary technician (LVT, RVT or CVT) certificate is required.

Compensation and benefits

This position is federal GS-09, salary $56,233- $73,105. Benefits package is included.
