Description

Out of Africa Wildlife Park is seeking an engaging and motivated individual for a full-time tour guide/swing keeper position at a fast-paced, hands-on wildlife park. Candidate must have a good retention ability for extensive animal facts and must be comfortable driving large tour vehicles. Applicants must be able to engage with both people and animals on an hour-long tour and be able to handle the physical exertion associated with an outdoor wildlife position. The position will be under the direction of the hoofstock department, but will also aid the carnivore, reptile, and small mammal departments as needed. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, conducting tours with some hands-on animal interaction, driving trams to shuttle visitors to different areas of the park, cleaning vehicles, directing visitors to park events, answering guest queries, assisting animal departments with waters, diet prep, landscaping, vet procedures, and habitat cleaning/maintenance. Schedule includes weekdays, weekends, and holidays as assigned. Applicants must be willing to work outside in extreme temperatures and must be able to cope with a high volume of visitors.

Education and Pre-requisites

Degree in biology, zoology, ecology, wildlife management, or related field is preferred. Applicants must have good observation and communication skills, work harmoniously with fellow staff and supervisors, and be able to work independently. An outgoing, positive personality is essential. Background in large animal husbandry and public speaking preferred. Must be able to lift 75 pounds. Ability to drive large vehicles, heavy machinery, and manual transmissions are a plus. Drug test will be required upon being hired.

Compensation and benefits

Starting salary is commensurate with experience, but will be in addition to tips made on tours/shuttles. Paid holidays after 3 months and 1 week vacation after 1 year.

Keeper Chat Video Instructions:
Since our department engages heavily with the public conducting tours, it is necessary for you to portray your skills with public speaking in an engaging and entertaining way. Please provide a short clip of you conducting a keeper chat about an animal either at a previous facility or at home. This can be about any species, real or imaginary, just be sure to make it both educational and entertaining. Have fun!
