Description

Oversee and coordinate the daily operations of America’s Teaching Zoo including administration, animal population management, and building and grounds maintenance. E

Based on the educational objectives of the academic program, collaborate with faculty to develop and implement plans for the facilities and animal population of the Teaching Zoo including the development of student projects to meet specific course learning objectives and assist in the maintenance and improvement of the Teaching Zoo; supervise projects. E

Ensure the safety and security of the public, students, faculty, staff, and the animals at the Teaching Zoo; develop, implement, oversee, and evaluate safety protocols; perform safety rounds and routine safety inspections of the grounds and facilities; document unsafe conditions; coordinate, supervise and evaluate repairs. E

Provide emergency first aid to both animals and humans. E

Implement an emergency disaster plan for the Zoo, revise as needed; respond to on call animal emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; arrange for coverage as needed; coordinate with Campus Police to provide for security. E

Monitor the animal population and oversee the care and maintenance of the animals; perform rounds and routine inspection of the animals; monitor the animals’ health, quality of diets, and physical activity to ensure their mental and physical well-being; collaborate with the veterinarian and faculty to make necessary changes for the animals’ welfare; consult with the veterinarian to determine potential infectious animals and institute the appropriate protocol. E

Oversee the Zoo record keeping and maintain required documentation; maintain an inventory of the animal population, with a history, ownership, and specific requirements for each animal. E

Monitor and ensure compliance with all federal and State laws, regulations, rules, and standards pertaining to zoo management and exotic animal care; review, renew, and update all animal and facility permits from federal and State authorities, and animal control. E

Oversee, evaluate, and develop the enrichment program for the animal population; provide documentation of the program to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. E

Develop and implement procedures for all animals arriving or leaving the Teaching Zoo; capture, restrain, cage and transport animals as needed; place new animals in quarantine as directed by the veterinarian. E

Ensure the maintenance of the physical plant, the facilities, and the landscaping; assess conditions, and replace and upgrade as needed; coordinate with Maintenance & Operations Department to maintain the facility and enclosures; review facility repair work and maintenance of the grounds. E

Develop and maintain the budget for the Teaching Zoo; monitor and document income and expenditures; process requisitions; monitor and document petty cash fund; institute secure process for collecting cash, including monitoring, collecting, and documenting cash and other income, and making weekly deposits. E

Hire, supervise, train, and evaluate Zoo personnel, interns, and volunteers; ensure staff receive all necessary training regarding equipment operations and Zoo protocols. E

Edit and update the Zoo Procedure Manual. E

Attend meetings and/or serve on committees related to animal care and use. E

Order and maintain inventory of food and supplies for the Zoo. E

Operate a variety of equipment in the care of animals: blow darts, syringes, veterinary equipment, vehicles (e.g., truck, van, and horse trailer). E

Collaborate and facilitate activities related to the improvement, update, and refurbishment of America’s Teaching Zoo; participate in designing animal enclosures; develop and oversee plans for large zoo projects. E

Collaborate on, and oversee, the marketing, fundraising, community service activities and special events at the Zoo; develop marketing materials; oversee and coordinate telephone and web page information and animal rentals. E

Supervise the Zoo on some weekends and holidays in a shared rotation with other staff members, as needed. E

Perform related duties as assigned.

E = Essential Duties

Education and Pre-requisites

A bachelor’s degree in animal science, zoo management, or a related degree AND three years of experience in the care and handling of exotic animals in a zoo or entertainment park AND one year of supervisory experience.

OR

A bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university AND four years of experience in the care and handling of exotic animals in a zoo or entertainment park AND one year of supervisory experience.

LICENSE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid CPR certification
Valid First Aid certification
Valid California’s driver’s license

Compensation and benefits

$6,161.00 – $8,545.00 Monthly
