Position: Sr. Director of Operations
Reports To: Vice President of Operations
Job Summary:
The Sr. Director of Operations is responsible for select daily operations of The Living Planet Aquarium, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The Sr. Director of Operations leads select Operations departments in visualizing, articulating and producing superb hospitality and guest experiences. The Sr. Director of Operations supports Aquarium executive management to establish short/long term goals and ensure each department under their leadership achieves profitability and efficiency while maintaining high performance standards set by the Aquarium. The Sr. Director of Operations must be able to lead a diverse team as well as develop and train existing and new team members.

The Sr. Director of Operations must possess strong organizational skills, exceptional attention to detail, administrative skills, knowledge of operations management, effective communication skills, and outstanding guest relations/guest experience skills. This position requires a thorough knowledge and understanding of attractions/hospitality operations, business strategies, budgeting, and optimization of a visitor based regional attraction. The Sr. Director of Operations will ensure attention to detail and sense of urgency on all responsibilities. The Sr. Director of Operations must be a creative thinker, strategic and results driven to continually advance the mission and goals of the Aquarium.

Overview:
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following tasks:
• Oversee day-to-day operations of select departments within Aquarium facility.
• Assist the Vice President in the implementation of the vision of the organization, development of long range and annual goals, evaluation and regular reporting of progress towards goals.
• Ensure timely execution of organizational and departmental objectives into key components of the Aquarium operations.
• Manage day-to-day operational needs and operational performance to determine optimal working procedures/systems and identify areas for improvement and efficiency to generate higher performance.
• Work with department heads to develop their annual budgets, to accurately forecast financial performance and to deliver financial results in accordance with those budgets.
• Analyze metrics and provide regular reports to Vice President; including but not limited to, guest scores/comments, cleanliness ratings, financial reports, guest satisfaction, and employee engagement/turnover.
• Assist in research, development, evaluation, and implementation of new products, services, technology, and processes to ensure The Living Planet Aquarium a competitive position in anticipation of changing guest needs within the dynamic tourism/attractions environment.
• Proactively troubleshoot operational issues and continuously improve service quality.
• Ensure Operations systems and standard operating procedures are up to date.
• Ensure regulatory compliance with all policies and procedures and monitor internal control environment of departments.
• Assist in preparation and maintenance of AZA accreditation status.
• Monitor/Manage vendor performance and regularly report progress to Vice President of Operations.
• Work closely with banquets, cafe, facility rentals and gift shop operators to ensure continuity of brand, guest experience and optimal revenues.
• Ensure that performance of all department personnel is reviewed regularly and new staff are selected and appropriately trained.
• Train team members on the importance of, and techniques in, providing world-class guest relations and guest service.
• Identify opportunities for staff growth and development, and mentor staff to realize the opportunities.
• Other responsibilities as assigned by the Vice President of Operations.

Areas of Departmental/Staff Supervision:
Proven skills in operations management, guest service, business management, and project management. Responsible for overseeing productivity, strategic plan implementation, income and expenses, and personnel issues to maximize each department’s potential for the following departments:
• Guest Experiences and Operations
• Facilities Management and Security
• Group Sales and Events
• On-site Partners/Vendors

Education and Pre-requisites

Education:
• A minimum of 5 years’ experience working in the Attractions/Aquarium/Zoo and or Hospitality industry.
• A minimum of 8 years’ experience in operations management and financial oversight.
• Degree in Recreation, Hotel, Restaurant, Business Administration, Hospitality Management, Business Development, or related field is preferred.

Critical Skills/Competencies:
• Proven skills in operations, business, and people management.
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communications skills with strong guest service background.
• Highly detail oriented with strong organizational skills.
• Demonstrated experience & ability to manage and supervise a team of 50+ employees.
• Articulate, organized and well-spoken.
• Effective problem solving and mediation skills.
• Demonstrated ability to share skills and knowledge with others.
• Proficiency with MS office, Accounting and Galaxy Ticketing Software.
• Demonstrated ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced setting.
• Proven ability to cope with conflict, stress and crisis situations.

Physical Demands of the Job:
This job requires extended periods of standing and walking as well as periods of sitting with data entry.

Special Working Conditions:
Job will primarily be in a high paced visitor attraction environment. Weekend or evening work is expected and some holidays.
