HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION
The Senior Scientist develops programs for scientific research, conducts independent and collaborative research in a specialized area of biological science. This position reports to a Director level or higher in the Conservation Science & Wildlife Health department.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Develop highly complex scientific research programs in a specialized field of study enhancing the organization’s reputation and conservation approach.
Determine study subjects, research parameters and methodology, and cost requirements taking into consideration long term strategic goals and conservation needs and trends.
Lead projects independently with little to no supervision including directing the work of other Scientists and Research Staff.
Oversee and conduct data analysis and interpretation.
Manage scientists and/or researchers in assigned research/laboratory and conservation operations including, but not limited to, interviewing, hiring, performance management and scheduling of assigned tasks.
Evaluate funding sources, prepare grant applications and recommend grant sources, while working closely with internal business partners.
Consistently update research parameters to ensure a high level of data research integrity.
Make presentations to various groups with the goal of educating on the scientific research methods used, the shared goals and recommendations.
WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance (SDZWA) Conservation Science team is seeking a highly qualified and motivated candidate to conduct scientific research on the physiology of reproduction including assisted reproductive technologies, gamete physiology and cryopreservation with the ultimate goal of advancing SDZWA’s conservation efforts. The successful candidate must have a strong interest in developing an innovative program to improve gamete collection, manipulation, and cryopreservation, in vitro embryo development, and artificial insemination and embryo transfer, to enhance biobanking and artificial reproduction techniques.
An advanced degree in Reproductive Physiology, Cell Biology or related discipline; scientific writing skills, as demonstrated in peer-reviewed publications; effective oral communication; ability to work independently and as part of a team, and fluency in the English language are required. Any of the following skills are highly desirable: in vitro embryo production, gamete evaluation and cryopreservation, assisted reproduction techniques, somatic cell nuclear transfer, and basic molecular lab skills.
JOB EXPERIENCE
Must have experience conducting increasingly responsible research in a specialized field.
Must have a noteworthy publication record in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS
PhD is required in a specialized area of biological science and/or equivalent education required.
Special certification and/or licensure is required for some assignments.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of governmental regulations applicable to animal research, hazardous materials, and safety required.
Demonstrated effective leadership skills to lead highly diverse teams.
Strong working knowledge of grant writing process and grant best practices.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Able to prepare and present compelling presentations to large audiences.
Able to operate moderately complex computer software programs.
Demonstrated ability to keep up to date with scientific advances in research and research methodology.
Current standing in scientific community and professional connections.
