Description
OC Zoo has a current vacancy for a Senior Parks Animal Keeper. The Senior Parks Animal Keeper is the senior level classification in the Parks Animal Keeper occupational series. Positions in this class are characterized by their ability to both lead and work with zoo personnel caring for the animals and maintaining the zoological facility, and to monitor and maintain all zoo operation transactions and collections. This position will have registrar duties of maintaining animal records and training staff on the zoo data base system. Senior Parks Animal Keepers are under the general supervision on a Zoo Curator or Zoo Manager. Incumbents may act as first line supervisors for Parks Animal Keepers and subordinate office staff. The OC Zoo staff members are committed to providing a high-quality operation of animal care and pleasant visitor experience.
Specific Responsibilities:
• Monitor and maintain the animal record keeping system, audit data submission, update collection records, and train staff.
• Assist in the renewal of required Federal, State, and local permits. This includes the tracking of permit renewals, preparation of documentation, review of all requirements, and updating all hard copy documents for inspections.
• Supervise work of contracted Park Attendants, Parks Animal Keepers, volunteers, and other outside contractors when necessary. This could include assisting with work duties, mentoring and training.
• Coverage for short staff days to perform duties of the Parks Animal Keepers in the care of the animal collection.
• Conduct guided interpretive tours, presentations, and programs.
• Assist with animal medical procedures and communicate with zoo veterinarians.
• Assist with the inventory and procurement of needed supplies for the operations of the zoo.
• Compiling and writing monthly reports, reviewing policies and procedures, making observations of operations/animal issues and identifying solutions.
Education and Pre-requisites
Knowledge of Federal, State, and local laws regulating animal acquisition, disposition, exhibition, husbandry standards, transportation, and permit with the U.S. and abroad.
Proper care, feeding, medicating, training and conducting enrichment activities for an animal collection.
Understanding of accreditation standards, USDA and California Fish and Wildlife regulations as they pertain to caring for animals and ensuring they are health and their habitats are in compliance.
Practical experience with maintaining habitats to ensure they are clean and free of dangerous items that may cause harm to the animals. This would include but limited to: removing old debris and animal stool, replacing bedding, inspecting enclosures, adding dirt, raking, mowing lawns, changing perching, seeding lawns, maintaining pump systems, cleaning and disinfecting enrichment toys.
Compensation and benefits
Rate of Pay: $24.42 – $32.90 hourly
