eneral Purpose

This position directs and oversees all human resource functions to attract, motivate and retain a workforce that is dedicated to the Purpose of the Fresno Chaffee Zoo. This position actively collaborates with leaders across the organization to build and deliver programs, processes and initiatives for our people. This position is a key leader in driving our Purpose Plan team pillar who will implement and deliver programs focused on fostering an inclusive culture where employees can thrive.

Our comprehensive compensation package includes Medical/Dental/Vision, Employee Assistance Program, 401k, 10 Paid Holidays, Paid Sick and Paid Vacation time on an accrued basis. The minimum pay for this position is $78,000. Offers will be based on the successful candidate’s experience.

Essential Functions

Collaborates with the Executive team and department leadership to plan and implement hiring plans to meet the staffing needs of the Zoo, both long-term and seasonally. Leads the effort of hiring and attracting diverse candidates and support the development of talent pipelines within higher education and community partnerships.
Designs and oversees an effective onboarding program to provide employees with a positive, informative introduction to the Zoo.
Collaborate and supports department managers to design and implement new hire training and professional development programs for all Zoo departments.
Assists Executive Team in the annual review, preparation, and implementation of the Zoos compensation program.
Oversees employee performance reviews and ensures accurate documentation is maintained in personnel files.
Develops and implements effective rewards/appreciation programs to recognize employees achievements and contributions to the Zoos success.
Oversees employee leaves of absence including required notices, medical certifications when necessary, and accurate tracking of legally-protected and/or discretionary time off.
Supports department managers in delivering and documenting disciplinary actions when requested.
Oversees and conducts terminations and exit interviews when needed, ensuring legally-compliant procedures and documentation.
Serves as primary point of contact for employee complaints and conducts timely investigations into concerns of harassment, discrimination or other misconduct.
Oversees the regular review of job descriptions and conducts periodic review/updating of existing job descriptions to ensure accuracy and legal compliance.
Ensures all personnel files and other employee files are maintained in an organized, secure, legally-compliant manner.
Consults with legal counsel as appropriate, and/or directed by the CEO on personnel matters.
Maintains up-to-date knowledge of federal and California employment laws and HR best-practices, and recommends ways to strengthen the Zoos HR programs.
Communicates policy/procedure changes all staff and assists managers with policy interpretation as needed.
Ensures that Employee Handbook is reviewed and updated annually to reflect appropriate changes in employment laws and Zoo policies/procedures.
Develops and maintains a human resources information system (HRIS) that meets the Zoos personnel information needs.
Effectively manages, coaches and trains and HR Department staff.
Provides leadership and direction for HR Department staff, and oversees all personnel management activities for the department.
Oversees timekeeping, payroll and benefits administration procedures.
Consistently maintains a high level of confidentiality with sensitive information.
Assumes other responsibilities as necessary to assure achievement of established objectives.

Education and Pre-requisites

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or Human Resources from an accredited college or university. HR certification a plus.
Minimum eight years of progressive leadership experience preferred.
Certification SHRM/HRCI preferred.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite is required.
Experience using progressing HRIS systems and software preferred.
Demonstrated commitment and record of achievement in organizational efforts to establish effective DEIA+ efforts
Strong verbal and written English communications skills required. Bilingual (Spanish or Hmong) communication skills a plus.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite is required.
Strong planning, analytical and decision making skills are required, with the ability to work in a dynamic, evolving organization.
Demonstrates motivational and problem solving acumen with a high degree of integrity and ethics.
Possesses the ability to articulate and inspire support for a vision of the future.

Close visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, viewing a computer terminal, and extensive reading. Color perception is also required.
Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication (in person and via telephone), at normal speaking levels with or without correction.
Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. The employee must convey detailed or important spoken information to others in individual and small group settings.
Hand and finger dexterity sufficient for typing and other administrative tasks.
The employee is regularly required to lift and/or carry up to 10 pounds, and occasionally up to 25 pounds.
Work Environment

The position functions primarily indoors, with occasional exposure to outdoor heat and cold.
Occasional local travel may be required.
