Description
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Security/Facilities Technician is a full-time position that addresses broad oversight of the zoo’s physical plant and its security. This role is central in assuring that the facility is secure and addressing the maintenance and repair needs of the zoo.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
MAINTENANCE:
• Provide preventative maintenance program throughout the zoo
• Maintain equipment and tools
• Perform minor construction and repair of exhibits and grounds as needed
• Performs other duties as assigned
SECURITY:
• Patrols building and grounds in designated areas, checks animal doors and windows for security, turns out lights, locks doors, gates, and points of access
• Maintains alertness to potentially abnormal conditions and responds appropriately
• Checks all pumps, generators, and electrical equipment on Zoo grounds as requested and reports operating failure
• Performs other duties as assigned
GROUNDS:
• Maintain cleanliness of facility (buildings and restrooms)
• Maintain cleanliness of grounds (recycling, waste disposal, pathways)
• Performs seasonal landscaping of grounds and snow removal as necessary
• Performs other duties as assigned
Education and Pre-requisites
QUALIFICATIONS:
• High School Diploma
• Valid VA driver’s license
• Basic knowledge of building and grounds maintenance, as well as vehicle and equipment maintenance
• Basic knowledge of trade skills such as carpentry, plumbing, painting, masonry, electrical, landscaping, welding, and HVAC
• Past maintenance experience is highly preferred
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Must be able to lift 50 lbs. without difficulty.
• Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions including rain, heat, and cold
• Must be able to traverse zoo grounds on foot
• Must be able to cope with steep grades while walking and or running
• Must be able to bend, lift, push, pull, rake and sweep without difficulty.
• Must possess visual acuity appropriate for general safety practices.
Compensation and benefits
Classification: Full-time (40 hours/week), Hourly, Non-Exempt, Flexible Schedule, and Must be Available to Work Nights and Weekends
Reports to: Building and Grounds Supervisor
Hourly Wage: $11.00 – $13.00 per hour
