Description

The Sanctuary Manager is responsible for leading operations at IPPL’s South Carolina Headquarters Sanctuary, including supervising department staff, developing plans, organizing and implementing sanctuary operations. IPPL’s Sanctuary is a home for rescued gibbons who have come to IPPL for a lifetime of compassionate care after former “careers” as laboratory subjects, discarded pets, and zoo exhibits.

This role is expected to have advanced knowledge of animal health and welfare, animal care practices, and departmental protocols and must operate independently in a proactive manner to ensure the completion of daily caregiving tasks and other departmental functions. S/he will be a leading member of the Animal Care and the Maintenance Teams, working with the Board and executive management to ensure safe and efficient operations of the Sanctuary. IPPL is currently transitioning its leadership roles, and views this position as a senior level executive working with the Office of the Founder and the Board’s Animal Care Committee to ensure the safety and welfare of animal residents and staff.

Education and Pre-requisites

KEY QUALIFICATIONS
• Undergraduate or graduate degree strongly preferred.
• Minimum five years’ experience at animal care facility, preferentially with primates, and supervision of animal care staff.
• Experience with captive animal husbandry, wildlife biology, general medical or veterinary experience a plus.
• A strong desire and ability to do hands-on caregiving work and a personal commitment to rescuing and protecting sanctuary animals, as well as an interest in the conservation of wild primates and their natural habitats.
• Demonstrated ability to get along and work effectively with the public, management, fellow employees, volunteers and other agencies and groups.
• Demonstrated good judgment, maturity, and professional performance.
• Authorized to work in the US and valid driver’s license with clean driving record required.

SKILLS & ABILITIES
• Safety: Must be familiar with OSHA regulations
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Computer Skills: adequate level of familiarity with office and productivity programs (Office, Asana, CRM).
• Strong organizational, time-management, and follow up skills.
• Professional presentation and attitude.
• Exceptional situational awareness at all times while working around animals.

Compensation and benefits

Compensation is based on experience.
