Description

The Reptile department at Out of Africa Wildlife Park encompasses a wide variety of reptile species including but not limited to:
• Giant snakes, venomous snakes, venomous and non-venomous lizards, Spectacled caiman, and various tortoises

Responsibilities:

• Perform good husbandry practices for a large variety of reptiles, including some venomous, living in indoor and outdoor habitats.
• Perform habitat cleaning, maintenance, landscaping, repair, and construction.
• Prepare healthy diets, monitor individual animal food consumption.
• Interface with veterinary and suppliers. Assisting with minor veterinary procedures.
• Be responsible and be able to emcee the daily “Giant Snake Show” talking on a microphone to large crowds.
• Conduct “Supermog” safari tours involving other department’s animals.
• Relieve visitor transportation occasionally if needed.

We have an expansive collection of snakes and lizards and we are a VERY hands-on facility. Because of this, a high level of competence must be exhibited every day when handling and caring for our collection. All sources of experience are accepted including personal pets, pet shops, and zoos.

Preference will also be given to those applicants with a high level of the construction skills needed for improving and repairing habitats, landscaping, and building new structures. Please include any experience you have working with machinery and power tools.

Education and Pre-requisites

• Applicants must have a minimum of 1 year of experience working with reptiles or in the zookeeping field
• Bachelors degree recommended, but not required
• Must be willing to work weekends and holidays
• Must be able to commit to 40 hours per week, year around
• Must be able to work outside in extreme temperatures and weather conditions
• Must have valid ID and reliable transportation to work
• Must be capable of lifting 50+ pounds
• Must be a minimum of 18 years of age

Compensation and benefits

• Starting salary is $13.50 per hour plus tips from tours. Possible higher starting salary with experience.
• Benefits consist of paid sick days and holidays after a 3-month probationary period, and vacation with pay after one year.
• No health insurance is offered at this time.
