PROGRAM MANAGER, INVERTEBRATE LIVING COLLECTIONS
Calling all (terrestrial) invertebrate lovers! Do you love teaching with, and caring for “bugs”?
We are hiring a Program manager that oversees our Invertebrates, including our Spider and Butterfly Pavilions, Insect Zoo Exhibits and more!
The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County was the first museum in L.A. to open its doors 107 years ago and is poised for an exciting new era as it plans for the future. Having recently completed a new strategic framework, the Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County—including NHM at Exposition Park, La Brea Tar Pits and museum in mid-Wilshire, and the William S. The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is seeking a Program Manager, Invertebrate Living Collections for our Education, Exhibitions & Programs department. The Program Manager, Invertebrate Living Collections works closely with the Senior Manager, Living Collections and is responsible for the oversight of the care for invertebrate animals in the Living Collection, their exhibition, the plants that support them, and contributing to programs associated with them. It is an exciting time as we embark on new journeys of becoming a museum of, for, and with L.A.
Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
-Managing and curating the Museum’s Seasonal Pavilions, all other live invertebrate exhibits, and related back of house facilities)
-Ensuring compliance for all policies and procedures
-Developing content for interpretation
-Training staff and volunteers on husbandry, exhibit content and USDA regulations
-Overseeing Animal Care Specialists in the care of invertebrates
Education and Pre-requisites
This position has the following requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Biology, Animal Husbandry, Entomology, Zoology or related field preferred. Accredited certification is acceptable. Demonstrable deep understanding of entomology and ecology. Extensive experience caring for several different orders of invertebrates Experience with orders represented in the collection is highly desirable.
Position requires a minimum of 4 years of experience working with live invertebrates in either a zoo or museum setting or extensive experience rearing them in a professional setting. Knowledge of government guidelines and permit regulations for working with animals such as those from USDA-APHIS, CDFA and U.S. Fish and Wildlife required. Must be willing to be responsible for regulatory compliance inside containment facilities. Extensive experience in horticulture and butterfly gardening is desirable.
Safety: Ability to work safely and efficiently around live animals in a way that promotes well being of the animals, staff, and the public. Proper use of safety equipment and protective clothing.
Live Animal Equipment: Demonstrated knowledge and operation of essential equipment used to maintain live animals.
Experience with exhibit development is highly desirable. Familiarity with exhibit fabrication techniques and tools desirable.

Compensation and benefits
The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is seeking applicants who have demonstrated experience and commitment working with a diverse community. Salary for this position is $26.44 hourly with experience plus excellent benefits. This is a full time regular, non exempt position.
