Description

Summary: Lead educational activities and assist full-time Education staff with programming and other activities at the San Francisco Zoo. Some of these responsibilities include: facilitating care and programs at Greenie’s Conservation Corner; leading family activities at the new Sculpture Garden; leading public activities monitoring animal behavior and supporting interpretive projects in the South American Tropical Aviary building; and leading WildNights, Girl Scout and Early Childhood programs. The position is Part-Time/As-Needed year-round (approximately 10-30 hours/week), however there is no guarantee of hours. The right candidate must be willing to work weekends and occasional overnights.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
1. Public interpretation around the Zoo; specific sites include: Conservation Corner, and the Sculpture Learning Plaza.
2. Provides daily care of Greenie’s Conservation Corner in conjunction with Education Staff and Horticulture Staff. Duties will include basic daily maintenance of exhibit (weeding, watering, planting, etc.) and leading classes or presentations in the exhibit.
3. Functions as a guide/leader for overnight groups.
4. Teaches classes and other programs as-needed.
5. Communicates effectively with all other Education staff, adult chaperones, youth participants, animal keepers, and security personnel.
6. Interacts with Zoo guests courteously and offers proper attention at all times.
7. Responsible for the safety of program participants and assists with emergencies if necessary.
8. May represent the Zoo at community events and present the “roadshow” along with Education staff.
9. Other duties may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidates for the position will possess a high school diploma or equivalent. A candidate that has completed some coursework in biology, zoology, ecology, or a related area is preferred. The candidate should have a basic understanding of conservation and wildlife issues, good verbal communication skills, excellent customer service skills, positive outlook, and be calm under pressure. The candidate must have good organizational skills and exceptional people skills, including the ability to communicate well with zoo visitors of all ages.

EDUCATION: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Undergraduate degree or pursuing a degree with classes in education, environmental education, biology, zoology being ideal.

EXPERIENCE: Public speaking and interactions. Experience working with youth (all ages) and adults, and enthusiasm about sharing information about animals. Previous teaching experience is desirable.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum age requirement is 18 years.

SALARY: $13.00 PER HOUR.
